My question is more of an observation on the Region B blu-ray discs - Where none of them so far have any form of Dolby or DTS trailers (the pcm ones can obviously be excused). Is there any reason, or is it strategic?
Not sure what trailers you are referring to? Do you mean the promo trailers that Dolby and DTS produce to market themselves?

Thanks.
Very close... good progress in recent weeks.

What impact would that make in terms of overal video performance as well as data capacity?

We are having discussions about xvYCC but absolutely nothing planned at this time.

Same for the main title.

paidgeek,

I can think of one "need". I don't want my comments to be construed as "complaining" though. I'm very happy with the 1.8 firmware update for the Ps3, but I have noticed that the "extra" power/crunching needed for this update has caused the fan to run more making my PS3 run much hotter/louder than it did previously. My concern with doing DTS-MA decoding in the player (since we've heard that DTS takes a lot of computational power to decode)...is that the PS3 will run hotter and louder. If it were to run any louder, it might become a problem. I would think just passing the stream out would be "easier" on the PS3 and easier for SCEA to implement, but I'm not an engineer.

In the end, I think both options should be provided for both TrueHD and DTS-MA. Decode in the player OR pass out bitstream to pre-pro via HDMI 1.3 output. At this point in time, I think folks would just be happy to get one or the other though.

Paidgeek,

let me congratulate you for the firmware 1.8 released later for the PS3 ,Is there a workaround for releasing a firmware for PS3 to be region free playback DVD ,I have a lot of dvd region 1 and Region 2 whereas my PS3 is hongkong imported .As a result it is region 3

For BD playback i'm not facing any problem Because i have region A.But i would like my PS3 to be region free playback is it Possible only for DVD.

thank you very much

Does this mean that DTS HD MA decoding will definitely be added to the PS3 in a future firmware update? Apologies if this has been answered previously and I've missed it.

Now that BD+ is right around the corner, any word on how BD+ enabled titles affect player performance? We've seen java enabled titles like POTC load incredibly slow on some players like the Sony BDP-S1 - will users experience any similar UI performance or loading issues due to the extra computing overhead of BD+? Also, while theoretically all Blu-ray players should support BD+ out of the box, will any of them require a firmware update to actually work with these titles like was necessary with POTC?

I am not aware of any modifications that will support this.

It is under consideration, but can't be guaranteed to be coming.

I can't answer with certainty because we have not run tests on every player. Time will tell, but if there is a performance issue, I am confident it will be fixed with a firmware update.

paidgeek, Are music BDs from Sony/BMG being handled differently or separately from films. I know Sony's music and movie divisions are separate, but there are similarities in the specs (high bitrate AVC, PCM audio) and Destiny's Child looked and sounded incredible. But the last two I've looked at, Chris Botti and Bruce Springsteen have been a farcry from Sony's consistently amazing movie presentations. They both sound great, but Botti had some serious encoding issues resulting in picture instability (mostly aliasing) and a moderate drop in resolve. It reminded me of some of Warner's early releases like Lethal Weapon, which I believe was attributed to an improper filter being applied, I believe during inverse telecine, as it seems like the Lethal Weaspon masters, among others were reported as 1080i.

Springsteen comes out next week and doesn't have much trouble with aliasing or jitter, but it's extremely soft - DVD soft, which is surprising for something that has a 2007 copyright. But, I haven't been able to find much info on the concert yet, like when it was actually filmed. Our Sony contact asked me to talk to the director of the Botti disc. But, I thought I'd run it by you too.

Paidgeek,

Are there any plans to support WMA lossless in the PS3? That is the only thing lacking as a media server for my needs and would love to see that feature as well as DTS-MA. With those two items, it may very well be a permanent fixture in my system instead of what was initially going to be a temporary player for BD!

Thanks,

Bruce is getting older. Not to mention he was never "pretty" anyways. They probably smeared a bunch of vaseline on the lens. Like the parody of the Streisand interview on SNL where it looked as if there was fog in the room.

We are working closely with Sony BMG, but there procedures for preparing masters are not the same as with film. They work under much more difficult circumstances, so the master quality can be expected to vary more than a film based title.

I have not heard any news about adding WMA lossless...

Thanks for the clarification.

Let us know when you're prepared to drop hints on the first all-BD-J, Profile 1.1 disc from either SPHE, Fox, BVHE or Lionsgate.
