As I am a new member, I hope in the future I can add as much to discussions as I have learned from the kind and knowledgeable people in the various forums. I work in the industry for many years and have supported Blu-ray from the onset. I await the imminent demise of HD-DVD as I have grown tired of their demo disc.

Lions Gate's a tough one to get ahold of. I got the above number after calling the number listed on their investor site... Edit - Here's the address, too: Theresia Rice Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. 2700 Colorado Ave. Santa Monica, CA 90404 As a last resort, you could send it to that address with a note (it's worked for some with Stargate) but I would call them first. Thanks for the number Steeb! The message says that they don't do exchanges, so looks like I will have to get back in contact with Amazon. I usually watch my movies the day I get them in the mail to make sure... of course the one I don't is the one that's defective.

If you've had the title for less than a month, I wouldn't even bother with Lions Gate. Amazon will "Next Day" you a new copy and pay for you to ship back the defective one. I've dealt with them several times (UPS tends to drop-kick my boxes) and I've never had an issue. Even if it's over a month, they still might honor the exchange - especially if you're a Prime member. Its been over 30 days, that's the problem. I am a prime member though, so I'll have to give them a call. Thanks.
Edit: I went ahead and called and got a replacement coming Monday. Good stuff! I love Amazon! Now I just need to drop off my TFE disc in the mail this afternoon and I'm good to go for that exchange. Last edited by Josh; 07-06-2007 at 04:18 PM. |

paidgeek: I don't know how you can help figure this one out.
There are PS3 ads in Europe and elsewhere. There are also the recent BD ad from Sony Europe, the one with the blue laser. Can any of the Sony sites provide those ads as a 1080p download file for playback on PS3s or something? Thanks! fuad |

Hi kjack,
Perhaps you may know, a recent Japanese news article says that current HDMI 1.3 transmitter chip from Silicon Image does not support transmitting of HD audio like TrueHD and DTS-HD because of hardware issue. It said HDMI transmitter multiplexes the video and audio in it, but current HDMI 1.3 chip cannot accept HD audio codec. Although there is a sample chip now for evaluation purpose, but that still has many bugs, difficult to make it work steadily, and only very few reference boards are available - 1-2 boards per company. Since this is the hardware restriction, current "HDMI 1.3" players could not support HD audio stream transmission by future firmware update. Is above situation correct? If so, what is the "real advantage" of featuring "HDMI 1.3" over "HDMI 1.2" on players now? It sounds nothing ![]() |

Paidgeek....another vote for lossless on audio.
I have several questions regarding audio and the PS3. Are there plans for bass management? You mention the problem with consumers buying 5 full range speakers to get the right sound out of SDDS(SACD, DVD-A, etc) but what I've done since I'm an avid SACD/DVD-A collector is to add an external analog bass manager. I can trim each speaker at a certain level and it pumps everything below that level into my subs. It makes a fantastic difference in sound and 'fixes' the big problem with not having all full range speakers. Listening to a few SACD's via the PS3 and my Yamaha player w/ the ICBM(bass manager) hooked up the PS3 has a ways to go to mimic the fullness of the sound from my other setup. Are there bass management plans? Even for regular 2 channel CD's I get far better SQ out of the analog outs using the analog cross over than all the digital stuff in both the Yamaha receiver or DVD player. Does BD have the -10db LFE problem like DVD-A? I heard the formats for some BD audio formats were basically the DVD-A spec wrapped in a new wrapper and along with it came the -10db LFE issue. Again this is something I compensate for with the external bass manager. I switched from HD-DVD to BD because of the impending price drop, the BB deal, and new titles on BD. I was always worried about audio quality from wht I read in comparison to HD-DVD. Granted I've only watched one title, Crank, but what I was worried about seems to be true, a lack of depth in the sound field. I'm watching the PCM track but something seems to be missing....as it does with SACD. I didn't play around too much with regular CD but will today. I'm happy with the idea though that everything in the PS3 is software, right? There is no hardware dedicated to the sound processing so Sony can do whatever they want with the processing to improve it. I'd love to be able to move my CD collection to lossless and have the PS3 match the output of my other setup. If SACD could match on the PS3 what I get out of my analog setup then I'd be happier yet....and I know it will never happen but DVD-A support would be so welcomed. Thanks |

PaidGeek,
once again the issue of region encoding has begun to flare up again as one of the main reasons people wont buy into BD and will support HD-DVD here is an example you may want to look at which includes a pole http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=588007 Do the BDA really insist on Region Encoding when people who want to import just can anyway by purchasing a USA player, which i have already done. (it is infact alot cheaper to buy USA stuff if you live in the UK) Would be nice if you guys could just do away with this, it is one of the only advantages HD-DVD has left. If you guys really want the win then do away with it. |

That's my understanding as well, that region coding is optional, but that any pressing or repressing of a film more than a year old, has to be region free. Can't remember where I heard that though. Regardless, you can't blame the format for giving studios the option or supporting something that content providers asked for. It's the studios that decide whether or not they want to implement it. Not having the option, is just another example of the lack of flexibility and design limitations of HD DVD that are part of the reason why studios like Fox and Disney don't support it.
I don't know anybody that likes the notion of region coding. But, it's not hard to understand why studios don't want to give consumers in foreign countries home video privileges during or before a films theatrical exhibition. Last edited by Chad Varnadore; 07-09-2007 at 03:24 AM. |

And also a film can have different distributors in different regions. They want to make sure the money stays in their particular region. After all, that's their bread and butter. Perfectly reasonable if you ask me, but then again i've always been weird.
