Simple. The thread went from critiquing the release to criticizing each other.

I didn't see a whole lot of that. Just stuff about the problems with the release.

Was the poor composition of Sam entering Mount Doom fixed in the new release?

The LOTR thread is locked.

Tip: Ban/lock users, not threads.

So the obvious solution is to temporarily or permanently ban the trouble makers. Locking the thread doesn't benefit the people that want to know about the release.

I hope Geoff posts his LOTR evaluation in here. This thread needs to be renamed "Middle Earth Saga 4K UHD Extended & Theatrical (2001-2014)" since it now has to cover all 6 films.

Well I just ordered this set on the strength of the other one. Maybe coloured by my recent foray into HDR and 4k on an OLED tv, but I'm into all of it so far. Better clarity and colours to my eyes.

And bought. Thanks for confirming it was identical to the US release. This might be the last time I buy these movies physically. DVD, Blu-ray and now UHD.

Hehe, that's what I do after reading Geoff posts. My first pass with movies, I'm a little oblivious and almost intentionally don't scrutinize..but I like doubling back after the fact to pixel peep and pause to see things he points out.

When lots of posts in a given thread are being reported to the mods, I think that they become tired of having to referee the mess, so they just shut the thread down in the hopes that people will chill the f out. The closures are usually temporary unless they have to keep closing the thread over and over.

We're people losing it over the new grading too?

Watched Unexpected Journey tonight. Even though I am a huge fan of the LOTR, I have only seen the Hobbit films once, so it’s exciting to see them all again. Was very impressed with the transfer and the sound mix. The HDR steals the show and makes the vistas absolutely gorgeous. Height channels are very active and create an immersive soundstage. Very happy with this release and looking forward to the next two chapters.

These come with a WB survey (code on back of the digital copy) that may help with saving physical media or kill it, depends on how you answer. It's worth a shot. Spread the word.

I have only seen the Theatrical version. Which is the better version. Extended or Theatrical? I know it's always a debate and never a clear cut answer...But I'll ask anyways!

Both versions have good and bad elements. You should watch the extended versions at least once tho.

My personal preference is:

Fellowship of the Ring Extended
The Two Towers Extended
Return of the King Theatrical

But the extended version of the Return of the King has scenes that I like so I watch that version occasionally.

I'd read some comments saying the VFX work overall looks even better maybe because of the HDR. But too bad to hear about this whole scene. If you've watched the making of, that whole scene with them turning the thingies on to make liquid gold and then defeat Smaug was the last scene they worked on.

They literally had to deliver the film the same day (for the premiere I think) and so yeah, it's rushed and it shows alas.

This is the hobbit thread I was asking about the hobbit.

I have seen both versions of lotr already. I prefer the extended.

For the Hobbit trilogy I would say...

An Unexpected Journey Theatrical
Desolation of Smaug Extended
Battle of the Five Armies Extended

Watch the extended. As has been mentioned earlier in the thread - there are are lots of subplots which will have no pay offs in the theatrical. Theatricals will leave you dangling as to the fate of key characters.

Extended are better. You will also find more fantasy action in extended specially Part 3 which have some standout sequences that were cut from theatrical.

I think for LOTR - PJ's preferred version is theatrical
For Hobbit, his preferred version is extended
