Watched An Unexpected Journey today. Looks nothing but amazing to me. I can only imagine how much better the other two can be. Didn't see a single issue but didn't look for any either. Did notice some smooth faces early on but I imagine it was de-aging of a few actors. I'm also glad they didn't go for HFR on these. Wasn't a fan of how smooth Gemini Man was. Anyways, haven't seen LOTR ones yet so that'll be an interesting comparison.

I am disappointed that the 4K Hobbit Trilogy does not have any extras at all. The extra features for the Hobbit trilogy normally is massive with enough material to last several days and even over a week with the several audio commentaries. The good news is a complete middle earth 6 film collection is planned on 4K Blu-ray in summer or late 2021 with brand new bonus content that is still in production.

Blu-ray 3D fans kept their Hobbit movies on the Blu-ray 3D format so they can see the Hobbit in true 1080P 3D quality. And any one that wants to watch the extra features for the Hobbit once again can watch those on the Blu-ray 3D discs. Some people will instead just wait for the complete 6 film 4K middle earth collection to see all the new bonus material which should also include all or most the old bonus material.

It's already been stated that the new set won't contain any of the old extras.

I came across this old announcement teaser for Hobbit series on youtube. I like this color grade so much better than anything I saw in the theater.

Specially look at the shot of Bilbo jumping over the fence. Almost looks filmlike. In the color graded version, it looks animated because of the unnatural greens and stuff.
PJ really went in a different direction with the look of the Hobbit films with a very CGI sheen. I think he could have still made it look naturalistic.

The sheen was probably there to offset some of the added realism from the HFR. Otherwise it could have gone too far in making everything look too staged without the motion blur of 24fps. Of course, when converted to 24fps it takes on an even more cartoonish aspect.

Every time I watch these films I have a hard time taking the dwarves seriously in combat scenes.

Look I know they fight and size isn’t everything.

But they look like midgets.

...I’m supposed to take them seriously against orcs?

As very good as The Hobbit films look, I really wish Peter had shot them all on film. It cannot be overstated how much they lost by shooting it digitally. I imagine the LOTR series on Prime Video will be digital but I hope they tinker with it in post to give it some texture.

You think they're too smooth and textureless as it is, wait until you see the UHDs. Ooof.

This is true for just about every fight scene in every LOTR and Hobbit movie.

Yeah this is a major screw-up. Its only on the Extended 4K. Theatrical is correct.

All four 1080p Blu-rays are also correct (theatrical, extended, theatrical 3d, extended 3d)

Orcs are not that tall either. That's why Frodo and Sam were able to disguise themselves in Mordor.

So I don’t have the 4k trilogy of the Hobbit. Does this set have the same issues as TLoTR? If they do I won’t bother getting it and will stick with my 3D set.

After watching The rings trilogy I don’t want more of the same as in waxy smooth faces and dnr in general. Some of it on TTT is damn awful.

If you have a 3D TV (and 3D TVs are scarce) and The Hobbit in 3D you should keep it anyway. If you do decide to buy The Hobbit Trilogy in 4K you'll have both versions, one in 4K and the other in 3D.

How did you do when Legolas took on the elephant?
How about when the dead army took on everyone?
Something tells me these movies aren't for you.
Also, in real life, Liam Neeson is kind of a weak, old man. So I'd steer clear of a lot of his work in the past decade.
Also, no attractive woman wants Kevin James or Adam Sandler...

Liam Neeson is weak in what way, and do you know him personally to make such a invalid statement? And speaking of Kevin James and Adam Sandler, regardless of their real life personality and looks, there is somebody for everybody because opposite attracts. If attractive people are only attracted to other pretty or good looking people means that they're shallow and superficial.

Exactly!
But if I choose NOT to spend more bucks on these titles, I'm perfectly happy with my 3D sets of both theatrical and extended editions of "The Hobbit" films.

I watched those overcooked 4K and then watched the 3D, and for me the choice was easy - stay with 3D. It’s really good as far as the digitally shot film goes. But 4K - meh, too much sharpening and DNR.
