You know, for someone who knows a lot about movie picture quality, you could at least pretend to know as much about being nice to other people.

Eh, I can't stand people. I am here to give them their opinion, not to play nice. Someone recently PM'd me having a whinge about something I'd said about them and after a couple of messages said something like "you don't have to be so mean in private as well, you don't have to act your forums persona here". Here's the thing: it's not an act.

PS

Get Back still looks like boiled shit and Peter Jackson should never be allowed to supervise any kind of film transfer ever again. Not for his own movies and certainly not for anyone else's.

PJ just did an episode of WTF with Marc Maron and he talked for a bit about the restoration process for Get Back and his work on restoring Braindead, Meet the Feebles and Bad Taste. He was very gleeful in explaining the first thing he did was strip all the grain away to make it look "more modern" to which Maron gleefully agreed.

I really want the box set of his early works but I am telling myself now its going to look like hot DNR trash.

Jesus wept. PJ is such a hack. The worst thing about it for me isn't that he's obsessed with getting rid of that nasty grain stuff, it's that he uses the jankiest possible methods. I don't agree with getting rid of the grain but there are systems like the Lowry process that can do a FAR betterer job than whatever garbage he's using, he doesn't seem to give a shit that he's obliterating detail along with the grain and it just doesn't have to be that way, not in the year 2021.

He is working on his restorations out of a small studio in NZ with a team of...I want to say volunteers, but I may be misremembering. Either way "underqualified" came to mind as I was listening. It didn't sound at all like a cutting edge restoration process.

I never saw "And They Shall Not Grow Old" but did it also look like a wax museum?

Jackson has one of the premier post facilities in the southern hemisphere at Park Road Post, that’s the bonkers thing about it. But, like George Lucas before him, he’s surrounded by yes people who won’t dare question the orthodoxy of their boss.

TSNGO looked very waxy, yes, but it’s not mentioned as a pejorative by myself or any others because the point wasn’t to present that decrepit footage looking as good as it could do in itself, the point was to degrain, clean up, colourise, stabilise, normalise the frame rate and ultimately convert it to 3D, so the waxiness could be dismissed as a by-product. Trouble is, Jackson seems to hate grain/film in general so now the first thing he’ll do with ‘old sources’ is to treat them just like they were this 100yo war footage and strip out the grain, leaving a smeary mess behind that looks far more “modern”.

Removing Grain to look "more Modern" is the exact opposite of looking modern PJ. Jesus.

Just revisited some parts of Battle of the Five Armies.

EE and DNR applied quite liberally.

Frustrating as it could have looked stunning without these. I wish this director is not in the Restoration l Supervision panel. I hope someone has sent him a strong and right message about the true state of Middle Earth 4K transfers.

I recently read The Hobbit to my son and we both enjoyed the experience a lot. He's still a bit too young for these movies but I thought it might be fun to revisit them myself after having so recently read the book.

Boy, was I wrong.

I can relate. And I think your son could’ve totally handled the movie had it been a faithful adaptation.

Do you mean they put too much mature stuff in it for a kid to handle?

Tolkien basically wrote The Lord of the Rings to do something more mature, thematically rich and adult with the world he created in The Hobbit. Cinematically, it would make no sense to make The Hobbit into a PG-rated kids movie closer to Pixar or DreamWorks. Now, I know, the songs and humour and the cartoonish action are definitely geared towards the younger viewers, but they kinda had to try and do something more substantial with the narrative to make it fit as a LOTR prequel as closely as possible.

How are they too young? Kids have wonderful imaginations, which is great for the Jackson films.

In the middle of watching all six films for the third time with my six year old. She's loving the heck out of it. Loves the Dwarves, Elves and all the Mordor stuff. She's particularly fascinated with the ring wraiths. Literally just away to watch Return of the King extended cut with her (in one sitting). \m/

There's no benefit in hiding your children from things. I was watching Terminator and Robocop at that age. She loves those too, just thinking about it lol.

Really should get The Hobbit in 4k. LoTR looks amazing. Would love to see a high frame rate version.

Rightly or wrongly that's what the brief always was for these Hobbit movies and what people will never seem to realise. True, the initial plan was for two movies, one that adapted the book and another that was basically LOTR 0.5 which would bridge between the two, but I still think that Unexpected Journey pretty much fulfils this remit of film 1. It's a rather good adaptation IMO, a few liberties have been taken but it's the other two that do more of a megamix of stuff from the Hobbit, the LOTR Appendices and the collective imagination of Jackson, Boyens and Walsh.
