I can't imagine there wasn't an out clause. Sounds like they don't want to prorate any compensation they've been given, and they're hoping Toshiba won't call their bluff and make them do it if they make it public.

I think Dreamworks Animation stands to make SIGNIFICANTLY more money by holding up their end of the contract than they ever would by releasing titles on Blu-ray. If they can force Toshiba to pay up, might as well take it!

What will probably end up happening is, DW will get some prorated amount of the 100 mil, maybe 35-50 mil. They will come out ahead financially and we will get our blu's.

it sounds like toshiba was dumb and forgot to included an escape clause for themselves if they stopped producing hd-dvd. dreamworks is just taking advantage and letting tosh know that they're willing wait out the contract and keep collecting the $$$$

That would be a strange irony if Toshiba, in their zeal to close the deal with Paramount and Dreamworks, didn't think to consider what would happen if *they* folded HD DVD before the contract expired!

Well,if it helps any, I'm working on a digital projector, so I'll back you up. I am surprised you prefer 2K over 35mm, usually someone needs something more than the typical TI DLP cinema projectors to favor 2K. 4K is a lot easier, but I haven't seen the Sony 4K model, so I don't know where most of the commentators are coming from on that one.

Just wanted to say that I disagree with the people who didn't like Jon Stewart as the host of the AWs.

You can add another to that list. Bit old school though, I did it back in the day of two projectors with the nice foot switch. Been awhile though. I must say I still prefer the digital cinemas, film wears way too quickly.

Speaking of which, I took in Charlie Bartlett yesterday (was ok, but nothing great) and it reminded me how much I like the digital cinemas. They were using film, the image was not properly centered, the gate was HORRIBLE causing the image to look like Bourne 4 the entire time, and we were in the center of the theater and could hear the projector like it was set up right next to us. It reminded me more of the crappy science films I used to watch in school, not a theater showing.

Maybe I'm just hyper sensitive, but I still prefer E&S's 8K system.

Still, like I said, that’s good to hear and will perhaps dispel some rumors in the industry regarding their future intentions with the Final Cut Studio software asset.
Hopefully this kind of press will steer them away from doing anything drastic.

It has an out clause for Dreamworks Animation. It's just that DA don't want to exercise it, they want to keep getting the money instead.

Well, you can add me to that list as well and you better get busy typing that elaboration before we storm Château De Penton...

Ah well, were I work we have 8 35mm projectors and a single 70mm which is not in use though. Our commercials are digitally shown though from ProjectionDesign projectors - 2K res in the bigger auditoriums. It looks good and sharp, but I just like the image form a pristine film source better...

Dont you worry, we are fine

After Ruzowitzky and "therefor Austria" took the Oscar home this year it takes a whole lot more to get me upset right now (Ironically Die Fälscher is not on my personal list of top movies 2007 (or 2006 for that matter) - not even close)

btw I am not saying I disagree with you about 35mm vs. digital (4k). My days as projectionist (college time) are a few years back now with no real intention to ever go down this path again... Nevertheless the feel and touch of an 35mm film strip in the palm of my hands probably is were all this passion has its roots.

Does running a Telecine chain in broadcast count? Running those late night movies for the insomniacs. Good fun when the film breaks and you've got to keep it rolling into a box on the floor.

Haven't touched anything but still film (still have my own darkroom and a wind up BOLEX on a shelf) in a number of years though. Video stuff is all server based now.

I can see taking digital over BAD 35mm. You know, outdated uquipment, gate weave, print scratched to hell.

However, for a top notch 35mm presentation. A fresh print on a modern properly calibrated projector. I have not sen a digital presentation that can compare.

Never a projectionist, but shot a lot of 16mm, still use my 35mm slr.
I'm ok with digital taking over, it just needs to equal the warmth, color and beauty of film. We have a habit of replacing things with newer tech before it meets or exceeds the old one, for the sake of convienience.

I was a projectionist but this was back in the stone age of the early 80s (1984-86, part of the time I was in college). I must admit I prefer digital because while "pristine" film can look great, I almost never see a pristine print.
