I wonder if we won't get a nice package for this, like Touch of Evil and Double Indemnity.

Let's hope not. Also that disc suffers from edge enhancement, most shockingly on Gregory Peck's eyebrows in some of the court scenes.

More likely it's just taking longer than planned, which is no surprise if they're using the original negatives because they were too far gone to use for the 1991 photochemical restoration. With digital they can now do all sorts, like combining the colour of other preservation elements with a badly faded negative to bring it back to life, but it'll still need a deft touch to get it done right. Fingers crossed RAH has been as heavily involved as he was a quarter of a century ago.

I hope they ruin everything they ever release the way they ruined To Kill a Mockingbird.

Wait, there's a problem with the current BD release? News to me. I've watched it about 3 times since getting it without noticing anything out of the ordinary. Still, I'm curious what a new restoration could do for the film. I'll be on the lookout for more information.

They certainly didn't turn into born-again purists and they're still a little too willing to make what they would call necessary compromises -but- that all said they do seem to be much more respectful of the original materials and more willing to trust that consumers feel the same way. They could still use a Grover Crisp or two over there but overall I like the direction they've been taking over the past two or three years. |

People complained about the HD DVD when it came out, saying it looked like an upscale and that it was full of noise. They were wrong about the upscale part, it clearly wasn't, but the grain was very noisy looking. Then came the BD, where they took the same HD master and just slathered on the noise reduction, leaving everyone looking like wax figures. I am not proud to admit that the gimmick of the slipboxed (ala early Arrow titles) 'Original Poster Series' got me to pick up the ugly looking Universal BD. I think when I pick up the new remaster, I'll at least hold onto the poster art cards. I think there were 4 or 5 of them. |

I really hope that Universal brought Robert Harris in to supervise the new restoration. I'd love it if this was a Criterion release. Even if it isn't I hope Universal gets the rights to include all the Criterion extras.
I'm looking forward to the re-release of Spartacus with the new transfer. Every time I watch Spartacus I borrow my friend's Criterion DVD Edition. It still looks and sounds good. |
