Definately understand. I'm going to school in the dorms, so I try to use as much power from them as possible.

Understand the bit about saving $$$. Would encourage you to figure out the SMP clients though, as they generate FAR more points than the 'single' clients, even on the same hardware.... |

I had the older (1 year ago older) SMP clients running with the "Nick4Eva" affinity manager and then took it all off - then they began using a new MPI client that I can't seem to get to work for the life of me...I was all for overclocking and cranking my Q6600 up over 3GHz on air cooling but I just can't be bothered with letting my PC use up that much energy and me maintaining the little nuances that come along with the folding on the SMP. My PS3 will continue to plug away as it runs...

Uh... I was under the impression you had to be CONSTANTLY connected to the net to fold... but I'm typing this now and the PS3 is still folding Even though the LAN cable's not connected)!
What else can I do? Can I play a CD?... DVD?... Blu-ray? Can I play a game while it folds? |

I've betrayed my old folding team, and switched my allegiance to this site's team. With the combined might of our PS3s, we will bring glory to Stanford's research by crushing all who stand before us. Other folding teams will quake in fear at the mention of blu-ray.com. All hail team 56895!

what are the SMP clients? i thought on the PS3 it just gets assigned a WU, completes it, then uploads it and starts again. or is this something that you do on the PC?

It isn't recommended for dual core cpu's though. If you want to add serious points also download the GPU client for your graphics card(s) |

I'm able to get around 2000 ppd on a E6400 (intel 2.13ghz dual core), and 4000 ppd on a Q6600 (intel 2.6ghz quad core), using the linux 64-bit smp client. I get about 900 PPD for my PS3. If I remember right, when I was using the non-smp client on the E6400 it drops down to around 500 ppd. So you get a 300% points premium of using the SMP client on the same hardware vs using the normal one. That's a pretty big difference. |
