For Episode VIII, sure they have to shoot next year.

But for Episodes VIII and IX? If they're targeting every 3 years, that is 5 and 8 years from now, why are they hiring writers and producers this early?

Who says they're going with 5-8 years?

You must unlearn what you have learned.

I was referring to Beast's earlier post about 3 years per episode. Hiring people now for a film due in 2017 or 2018 is way too early.

My guess:

Episode VII - 2015
Episode VIII - 2016
Episode IX - 2017

Again they might be shooting this back-to-back, no reason why they can't.

I have to disagree with that. Doesn't look like that to me at all.

Exciting times!

Waiting 3 years for a new SW movie, has always been pure torture to me.
I'd very much welcome a 1 movie per year schedule, IF the quality doesn't suffer, and they don't have to go to multiple VFX houses.

SW is ILM, and should always be their baby IMO.

They were always going to leak the information this fast, regardless of if they were shooting back-to-back or not. Disney need to know that they have the writers and producers they want for the series even this far in advance -- there's no point in them waiting until the end of 2015 to start thinking about who they want to pen or produce the continuation, because that person might have taken another job and be unavailable at that point.

They have said that they'll release Episode VIII and IX every other year after the release of Episode VII but I can't find the article where it said that now, so there's every possibility they have changed that idea and gone with back-to-back shooting to have longer in post-production.

True, they mentioned that in the press release. But seeing how they're already prepping for Episodes VII and IX made me think that could have changed. Again like I said, just my guess.

The every film every other year thing still means they need to move the ball very quickly to make sure that they have their teams in place and ready to move swiftly. That's not a ton of time. That's why they're making all these announcements. If the rumors about the original cast being the main focus, I could see them wanting to move fast on the projects to guarantee they have them. That group isn't getting any younger.

Was the "film production every other year" comment meant as a "Star Wars Universe film" or a "Film in general for the studio Lucasfilm" comment?

Big difference. In one case it could lead to severe franchise fatigue (when cumulated to the TV series production), while in the other it makes sense for a (albeit smaller) studio to want to produce regularly.

For the Star Wars - the plan for Lucasfilm is that they'll release 2-3 new films every year that have nothing to do with Star Wars. As this article says, that's a hell of a change for a company that has released only 5 films from 1999 to 2012.

http://screenrant.com/lucasfilm-movi...e-adaptations/

The planned release for the Star Wars films is every other year although that might have changed by now. With the backing of Disney, Lucasfilm can now pretty much release as many films as they want, and I'm sure that we'll see many more Star Wars films in the future.

--

And, for anyone who isn't a major fan of the prequel trilogy, this YouTube video makes some good points on where Episode I could have been changed to make it better. The guy in it has some great plot and character ideas that would have allowed for the film, and the series, to be much richer and more rewarding that it was to some.

Kathleen Kennedy has told Lucasfilm employees that she wants the company to make 2-3 films per year. Presumably any movie, not necessarily Star Wars.

In the press release for the Disney purchase it was mentioned that they want to release a Star Wars film every 2-3 years.

So far only those are the official words. But anything can change.

Well, it was supposed to be a Trilogy of films. But I don't really see it happening. Unfortunately.

What got made was the most exciting middle chapter. The other films would have been a Prequel and Sequel.
