Kathleen Kennedy just announced at SW Celebration Europe that John Williams has committed to scoring the new trilogy. Expected news, but welcome nonetheless.

STAR WARS CELEBRATION EUROPE 2013: JOHN WILLIAMS TO SCORE STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

John Williams, the legendary composer who crafted the iconic, sweeping music of all six films in the Star Wars saga, is returning to score Star Wars: Episode VII, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced today at Star Wars Celebration Europe. Williams' grand orchestral compositions for Star Wars are among the most beloved and recognizable in movie history, from the classic "Main Title" theme introduced in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope to the ominous "Imperial March" from Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back to the stirring "Duel of the Fates" from the prequel trilogy.

Williams, whose career spans over six decades, has won five Academy Awards and has scored some of the most popular and critically acclaimed films of all time, including Jaws, the Indiana Jones series, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Lincoln, and countless others.

The composer joins a growing list of all-star creators including director J.J. Abrams, screenwriter Michael Arndt, and consultants Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg, who are shaping Star Wars: Episode VII, currently set for a 2015 release.

Watch StarWars.com's new interview with Williams below, in which he discusses composing the music for Star Wars: Episode VII, working with Kathleen Kennedy and J.J. Abrams, and why he's excited about returning to a galaxy far, far away.

You know that means these films are going to be shot pretty quickly in succession, if they want to keep Williams on board for the whole trilogy.

Ben Burtt created all the sound effects for every single Star Wars movie. He's even the voice for Darth Vader's breathing and R2D2!!

It wouldn't have been the same without John Williams scoring the ST.

I guess we can expect more Duel of the Fates type music then, I guess.

I believe they said they would want a new Star Wars film EVERY year starting in 2015. But the trilogy would be 2015, 2017 & 2019, with stand alone films inbetween.

Not sure if that is still the plan.

This news is a let down imo. JJ already said he would be doing the score, so nothing breaking. I wanted some big casting news.

That was the proposed plan in the Lucas/Kennedy videos, but it doesn't seem to have been mentioned since then. I'm hoping it still is the plan since that idea allows for greater exploration of the SW universe, as well as providing incredible opportunities for people within the industry, but it might wear out the excitement and nostalgia-factor for people pretty fast.

Man, they must be really behind if they just cast the composer.

Why? Hypothetically, they could have finished principle photography and be entering post-production before needing to hire a composer (not that it's recommended, but it could happen).

I can see these being shot just like Lord of the Rings/Hobbit. Shoot all 3 movies at the same time and release them at Christmas/Thanksgiving (or another large Holiday) for 3 consecutive years.

I think they just announced it because it was the only safe bet announcement they could make. Notice they didn't announce that Hamill would be in the movie, even though he was actually there.
