I'm doing a follow-up article on Friday for Pulp Epic on why the rumors might be true, and really, the only thing right now that leads me in that direction is this -- the Star Wars saga is like The Godfather films, a multi-generational story of a family. In this instance, it's the story of the Skywalkers.

One can assume Luke has no kiddos while Leia certainly will, so if Luke dies in 7, who are the Skywalkers that we will follow in 8 and 9? Leia's kids, I suppose, but what do you do with Luke? Kill him off like Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon? Or (implausibly) turn him to the Dark Side so you have him around for the next two films in a non-ghosty way. A Dark Side Luke -- as much as I absolutely loathe the idea -- could force Luke's vision in Empire Strikes Back (where he decapitates Vader only to see his own head in Vader's helmet) into becoming some sort of preview of coming attractions.

i can live with Luke going towards the dark side ( he might have resisted Palpatine's seduction but who knows if he was ready for say Darth Plagueis (or worse)
There are a few cool ideas to make an interesting arc for Luke but please dont kill hilm off in the old "mentor dies it in first part of trilogy" kinda way, that has been done 2 times now.

I, like Ernest, think that for the first one they're going to go for the most family - big time pleaser they can, just like both the OT and the OP did.
It just make sense both for fans and for business reasons.

Otoh, as for the overall plot arch for the new trilogy, what if
[Show spoiler]they went really dark and actually had Leia turn to the dark side, like Vader had threatened to do? Possibly after one of her children would die? How about it would be Leia herself who would kill Han in the second episode? And Luke trying to redeeem her in the third, but having to kill her in the end to save her other child, but not being able to, and it would be the 2nd Solo child that would end up having to kill his/her own mother to "save" her from herself, as all along she was corrupted by some unknown entity based on the Sith homeworld that they would end up confronting together, with the New Republic Armada having to confront bio-mechanical spaceships that are Force-sensitive around that world?

Too dark?

Probably

That shot of his head in Vader's helmet in Empire is the one thing that's always stuck in the back of my mind when discussing this 'Evil Luke' angle. In terms of the Saga (as it stands at the moment) that bit was always meant to signify that Luke really was his father's son, that he was prone to the same dark impulses and general recklessness, and then it was all tied up rather swiftly in Jedi with only a few hints as to Luke's possible destiny. But the very existence of a movie VII means that all bets are off and the Dark Side didn't just go away; I'm reminded of Vasquez' motto on her body armour in Aliens: The Risk Always Lives.

Not only did Kathleen Kennedy lie to the fans about that but she has totally embraced J.J. Abrams neurotic behavior. At this point, while we wouldn't have detailed information, there would be behind the scenes photos, possibly a brief paragraph or two about what the film would be about. Instead? We got nothing, except photos from that spy drone that was leaked of the Millenium Falcon and that Rebel fighter. J.J. got so paranoid that he actually purchased an anti-drone stealth vehicle that would block or prevent future photos from being taken.

Nothing has been released from Lucasfilm other than "we are filming Star Wars Episode VII". Hell, nobody even knows what roles the cast are playing, outside the original cast from the original trilogy. One look at the IMDB page tells the whole story. Abrams is so neurotically paranoid, that he isn't revealing ANY information about the film.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2488496/

Even if Lucasfilm isn't ready to release information about the plot, you would think that the actors and actresses and the roles they are portraying in the film wouldn't be on the level of National Security.
Enough already. They're going to release very little information. They'll release just enough to keep people talking about the film, but not enough to get people bored before the film is released.

Seems to me we already know most, if not all of the major actors who are appearing in the film.

Besides, even though there's a working script, a lot of the film gets shaped and somewhat re-written as it's shot and edited.

I think calling Kennedy a "liar" is a bit much. You sound like a petulant child.

There's a very simple reason they don't release more information. It hurts box-office. If you think you know the story, you don't need to see the movie.

As they say, "get a life".

I think a lot of the rumors we're hearing about Episode VII are just red herrings. Remember, this is J.J. "We're not doing Khan" Abrams we're talking about. They are feeding us false information to keep fans and the media away from the truth.

This.

Abrams is ensuring there's a smokescreen in place. Definitely smart of him. He and the rest of Lucasfilm/Bad Robot are well aware of the LationReview's and the BadAssDigest's of the world and their goals. A misinformation campaign was surely part of their original shooting plans.

Yeah, but how many people were actually fooled by the Khan fakeout? I certainly wasn't, and JJ ain't as shit-hot as he thinks he is when it comes to that sort of thing. He may even do a Khan and actually say 'there is no evil Luke in this one!', which would be all the confirmation I'd need.

I was actually fooled, especially when he had the actors like Benedict Cumberbatch and Karl Urban blatantly lie about it. But maybe that's because I really didn't want to believe that Cumberbatch was playing Khan. He would have been so perfect for Gary Mitchell, which was the villain I wanted.

Found this completely by accident when scanning through old episodes of Jon Favreau's cable show Dinner For Five, it's Mark Hamill talking about where he thought the character was gonna go in the third movie, and some of it is so close to what's been talked about it's scary. Now, I'm not saying it's gonna happen or anything, I just think it's damned interesting to hear it come from Hamill's mouth. And who's sat at the table with him? A certain Jeffrey Abrams.

Yep. He's well aware of internet leaks and I'm sure he's got a tight lid on everything.
And isn't that really for the best for all of us? Does anyone really want to know the secrets long before the movie comes out? I purposely avoid leaks and rumors for just this reason. I want to be surprised when I see it, not sitting there thinking, "oh, he's gonna die and this is about to happen next". That would suck.

What I'm really hoping for is that they bring the mysticism back to the force and the series in general. If I hear midiclorians even once I'm getting up and walking out.

You found it completely by accident when it's been on the Twitter feeds from the spoiler sites for the last several days? I saw the same videos on Saturday afternoon.

I'm not on Twitter or facebook or any of that other palaver, nor do I pay daily attention to "the spoiler sites". I honestly found it completely by accident, I was watching the DFF episode with Kevin Smith, Ben Affleck, Colin Farrell and Jennifer Garner and started watching a few others. I wanted to see the one with JJ, had no idea that Hamill was in that one too, and I started watching it. Mind......BLOWN.

Not going to read much of this thread, but just popping in to say that I just got potentially "spoiled" by a Yahoo headline that stated things about Luke in the supposed leaked script.

A HEADLINE. Not an article - that I would have to click on - but a f'ing headline.

I hate this spoiler culture.

But the catch was they were doing Khan. Most of the Into Darkness rumors turned out to be true so why shouldn't we believe these? That is all the more reason to believe everything being said - JJ will lie to the fans right up until the the moment the film is released so why believe anything he says before then?

Honestly, I do think a lot of this is going to happen as it is just the kind of thing that Disney/JJ think will wow/fool the audience - "they will never see this one coming". I mentioned it before, why not leave the reveal of Luke being the villian until the second movie? Build him up and then show it all to be deception and that he has turned after all. They want that to be the hook for the second film but really, it works so much better if it is in the next one. Kill Han at the end of the first one and have Luke say he will find out who did this and then in the next film show that Luke has turned and he did that to get Han out of the way.

I'd say a lot of the rumours have been orchestrated by Lucasfilm/Disney themselves to throw us "off the scent", as it were.
