That's a good metaphor: Again, it wasn't like he narrowed down hundreds of choices of directors to settle on Irvin Kirschner for Empire, or Ron Howard for Willow, or Charles Martin Smith (late of American Graffiti) for Radioland Murders.
He wanted personal in-cronies who knew his style, and wouldn't stray too far from collaborating with the executive producer and the established style.

Give a Lucas film to just anybody, and you get Red Tails.
They've got a writer who's steeped in fan-lore tradition, think they'll be similarly looking for directors who'll swear loyalty oaths.

(Okay, was anyone else just waiting for the fan-snipey Disney joke to drop the other shoe, and that the "Pirate Lords" would turn out to be the two feared pirates wanted by the Alliance, Jaxpa Ro and Kapp Tenhuk? )
Amen to everything here, bro.

Clarification, because I hate misinformation...Bonus content refers to George Lucas' contribution to the Hospital scenes in The Godfather, but they give a misleading impression. Here's the truth, from TIME magazine...

"The friendship between Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas goes back decades, to when they were both relatively unknown filmmakers in Northern California. Coppola served as executive producer on THX 1138, Lucas’ first film, and the year after it was finished, Lucas worked as an assistant on The Godfather. Lucas shot the footage of newspaper inserts that show major events during the scenes where the families go to the mattresses as well as the one above, which reveals to Michael the shooting of his father. But perhaps his biggest contribution to the film was a small suggestion he made to Coppola. After filming the scene in which Michael fends off would-be assassins while the don is in the hospital, Coppola realized he didn’t have extra shots to feature the sound of footsteps in the hallways. So Lucas suggested that he use the leftover shots of empty hallways just after the actors had left the frame. Lucas helped Coppola scour his original footage for those precious few seconds, which Coppola used in the film, greatly adding to the tension of an already white-knuckle scene."

Radioland Murders was directed by Mel Smith. I haven't seen it, desperately want it on blu-ray which is how I want to see it the first time. Read that it was unique experimental filmmaking.

It's on NetFlix...or was.

You just inspired me to go hunt down Coppola's TUCKER: THE MAN AND HIS DREAM. Fantastic movie, with some digital assists by ILM.

Clearly with Lucas for his good looks and fantastic body. I don't mean to be harsh but surely he knows and understands she was attracted to him at the beginning simply because of his money? (I write at the beginning because maybe she realised they have much in common now!)

Oh, don't get me wrong, I like him - in every interview he comes off as nice and genuine and down-to-earth. Just how often do you see old rich guys with young, model girlfriends? All the time.
I'm sure the money plays an integral part in the relationship but it must be more otherwise, as you say, she would have left.

Not sure if anyone's already posted the link here, but this is a fan website dedicated to Star Wars news and they seem to generally have real news items about the series on there first. About 3 stories down the homepage they have a section on Carrie Fisher apparantly confirming she will be in the new trilogy -- apparantly she claims that she thought it was "common knowledge by now". Just an interesting site.

No - ALL rich guys are *good looking*.

Ya ever seen some of the chicks that wealthy dorks have? How much more obvious could it be that the relationship is strictly about cash? I mean hey - all good. Just saying.

Money can't buy you love, but it does improve your bargaining position.

No, me neither - simply because the author of that blurb couldn't really use proper English and the link to the site that is was reported on does not work anymore. It might be the complete truth -- after all, it has been confirmed that the original characters will continue -- but it just seems all a bit under the radar at the moment, and I'm not sure why.

Guess we'll find out soon enough anyway - I can't imagine, with the 2015 date looming, details wouldn't be released soon.

There are 5 parts of that video on StarWars.com, one each week. I think the second writer and the director will be revealed in the fifth part three weeks from now.

NetFlix isn't available in my country though. Thanks for reminding me of Tucker: The Man and His Dream! Definitely on my list.

His girlfriend is Mellody Hobson self made millionaire herself. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mellody_Hobson I don't think she is dating him for money like people are assuming.

Maybe it has nothing to do with money or looks. Maybe she wants him because he's powerful and/or accomplished. There are women who are attracted to creative people (regardless of how you might feel about his directing and writing skills).

In any case it's none of our business. The tendency for people on the web (frequently incredibly unaccomplished people) to discuss intimate details of the lives of people who they don't even know is really astounding. I really love it when some guy who's never accomplished anything than scoring on a videogame feels they can rip apart someone who has accomplished much, even if they've done so with faults. (Not saying you're one of these people, just commenting in general).

I wondered how long it would take for someone who knew what they were talking about to chime in.
