Comforting responses, gents. Thanks.

Dont get me wrong. Despite the prequels being a massive disappointment (IMO ), I still believe Lucas had good ideas that were just poorly executed, and I think collaborating with the right creative team would do wonders for the final product.

I guess what Im saying is, I have no qualms with Lucas having input, as long as we now have someone who can say "no George, having a Gungan stepping in alien shit isnt funny, we're cutting that."

Well, that was a pretty uninteresting video. Clearly more interested in talking about how amazing Kathleen Kennedy is than actually even mentioning the series they're supposed to be talking about.

As more of these videos come out, I begin to notice more and more how Kennedy looks like she's going to grow horns any minute and Lucas looks like an uncomfortable and confused man who's suddenly starting to realise he might
have just sold his soul...

Quote:
Simon Kinberg and EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Scribe Lawrence Kasdan May Write STAR WARS Episodes 8 and 9

If you thought we’d be heading into the Thanksgiving holiday without one more Star Wars rumor for the road, you’d be wrong. Michael Arndt was recently confirmed as the screenwriter for Star Wars: Episode VII, and while everyone is busy speculating over who will or won’t direct the next installment in the franchise, it appears that Disney already has its sights set on Episodes VIII and IX. Word on the street is that the Mouse House is looking at Empire Strikes Back screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan and X-Men: First Class scribe Simon Kinberg to possibly get to work on the next two installments in the new trilogy right away. Hit the jump for more.

When Star Wars: Episode VII was announced, it was revealed that it was the first film in a planned new trilogy based on treatments by George Lucas. Lucas said that he passed all his story notes and treatments for further Star Wars films on to new LucasFilm head and Star Wars gatekeeper Kathleen Kennedy, and Disney made it clear that they would like to release a new Star Wars film every other year.

That kind of ambitious plan doesn’t move forward without some major planning, and Deadline is now hearing that Disney is approaching Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg to go ahead and get the ball rolling on Episodes 8 and 9. Kasdan’s name should ring familiar for fans of the original franchise, as he scripted The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and he also penned the screenplay for Radiers of the Lost Ark. As for Kinberg, he’s no stranger to franchise material himself as he wrote the scripts for Sherlock Holmes, X-Men: First Class, and the upcoming sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past.

I have to say I’m pretty over the moon about the mere prospect of Kasdan returning to the franchise. Lucas is still involved with the new films as a consultant, but it’d be great to inject the new films with some of the creative juice that crafted the original trilogy. Disney/LucasFilm is taking a strict “no comment” policy on all rumors and unofficial murmurings, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we heard an announcement regarding Kasdan and Kinberg’s involvement relatively soon, assuming they accept the gigs. Whatever the case, it appears that we won’t be lacking for new Star Wars films for quite some time.

Update: Kasdan and Kinberg Close Deals to Write and Produce 'Episode VIII' and 'Episode IX'

Update: Kasdan and Kinberg's involvement has been confirmed along with the news that the two will also produce. Heat Vision is now reporting that Kasdan and Kinberg have closed deals to write either Episode VIII or Episode IX, though the division of their responsibilities has yet to be determined. This means that Kasdan could possibly find himself writing the middle chapter in a Star Wars trilogy again, and we all know how that worked out the first time. The duo will also produce the films. Our original story follows below.

I'm suspecting we'll be getting the director announcement any day now...Or directors announcement, depending on if they want one or more for the new trilogy. It looks like it'll be full steam ahead next year, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the new trilogy filmed pretty close together with the writers already on board for all three.

I just really hope it's not Joe Johnson.

I pray it is Joe Johnston, for at least one of them. He fits the series, and his history with Lucasfilm would make him a great choice. I hope Jon Favreau gets a shot as well...

I'm still holding out hope for Filoni, but the background team sounds pretty solid that either director would be like playing with "house money" at this point.

No matter who helms this film, the great overall news is that Disney is plowing ahead full steam with this project. Great news!

Lawrence Kasden, great news.

Simon Kinberg...bad news.

So Rick McCallum will not be involved at all in this? More great news. I don't want this new trilogy to be so 'dense'.

Kinberg did great with 'Sherlock Holmes' and 'X-Men: First Class'. There were a lot of problems with 'X-Men 3', but there was more than one writer on the project, so there's no saying he was the main problem. He is also producing the new Neil Blomkamp film 'Elysium', which makes him sci-fi friendly, and I have a really good feeling that it's going to turn out great. I think he's actually a wise choice for the series.

Bringing in Kasdan always seemed like a no-brainer to me. I'd like nothing more for this new trilogy than for him to come on board. It will even make up for his awful Dreamcatcher adaptation (which was a difficult book to translate to the screen anyway).

I have no doubt that they already hired a director, at least for Episode VII.

I have a feeling they're going to do this back-to-back, just like the Matrix, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Back to the Future sequels. The Lord of the Rings trilogy also filmed back-to-back right?

I doubt they're going to go back to back. It sounds like they'll stick to the usual 3 years per movie.

I think it's going to happen a lot faster than that, with the way they're rolling out all the information like this.

I just finished watching the complete saga for the first time and I have to say that really enjoyed this a lot. Never have I been a Star Wars fan but I do have a great deal of respect for the series and I really do hope that they don't screw up the franchise for all the HARDCORE Star Wars fans out there because all I say is that if Disney **** things up ... let's just say that it's going to get very ugly.

They kinda have to roll out info fairly quickly on these. Since Episode 7 is due in 2015.
