Can't wait to see this when I return back home to Phoenix. I am trying to decide between seeing it in Dolby Atmos (which only the Harkins Cine Capri theaters have) or IMAX.

None of the IMAX theatres in Arizona will be screening the film in 70mm IMAX. Although I plan to see it at a real IMAX sized theater (the Harkins IMAX theatre at Arizona Mills), will there still a difference in picture in the IMAX scene (despite it being projected in digital IMAX)?

How 'Star Wars' Will Change Hollywood (Again)

Quote:
...opening weekend forecasts range from $170M to $240M domestic, though no film's topped $85M in Dec.

Quote:
'The Force Awakens' is equal parts Death Star (ready to destroy competition) and Jedi savior (promising billions to a hungry box office). In between, there is a studio whose $4 billion investment in Lucasfilm must pay off, from merchandise to theme parks to video games. Says one analyst: "No wonder J.J. Abrams is nervous."

needs $208 Million to beat Jurassic World Domestic for opening weekend. I think it just falls short, I see a lot of people(not hardcore fans just normal humans) waiting later on in the week to see this to wait for the crowds to die down a little bit

First showings in alot of major cities are sold out already. My town which didnt sell out any showings of Jurassic World are already posting sell outs for Star Wars at certain times for the first two nights. This is pretty big for a Christmas showing. Star Wars will easily break 208 million

Star Wars: $3,047,314,171
The Empire Strikes Back: $1,555,903,941
Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace: $1,468,673,890
Return of the Jedi: $1,135,503,765
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith $1,035,480,818
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones $857,205,792

These are how much each movie made with inflation WW. I don't understand why all of a sudden this movie is going to "blow" everything out of the water. I think the fans have hyped this movie to infinity and beyond and Disney took noticed and made sure you saw something Star Wars related every minute of the day. The fact is this movie will make a ton of money, no doubt about that. However I don't see it setting the opening weekend record and I think a lot of fans will be upset if it doesn't (which is crazy)

SW ticket sales tracking anywhere from $170 million to $240 million, even though no December film has ever debuted to more than $80 million, I believe. Think the debut will top out at about $200 million, it still has to compete with Mockingjay and to a lesser degree Heart of the Sea and Joy. Ah, I see Aero beat me to it. Thing is, Avatar hit a perfect storm and didn't have to contend with the juggernauts that are going to come out during this film's run. Wouldn't be surprised to see it finish with Avengers 1 numbers domestically and about $1.6 billion worldwide.

As excited as I am, never have I seen a movie so hyped. Almost every commercial. Almost every other store window. Branding everywhere on products everywhere. People humming the SW or Vader themes as they walk.

It will be interesting to see just how big the box office numbers are for this.

As befits a movie gunning to be the Biggest Ever, Monday’s Hollywood premiere of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is shaping up to be bigger than big.

Crews on Friday shut down Hollywood Boulevard from Highland Avenue to La Brea Boulevard and began erecting a giant tent that appeared like it might stretch almost that distance. The space is being prepared to accommodate a giant party that will follow the 6:30 p.m. debut of the seventh installment in the space opera.

But this will not be just a standard showing at the TCL Chinese or El Capitan Theater. Instead, Disney has hired out both of those storied theaters and the adjacent Dolby Theater, sources say, to make room for a super-sized crowd of special invitees.

Security and crowd control will also be at Academy Award levels, with 50 uniformed officers patrolling the four-block stretch and the surrounding area, according to an LAPD official. By comparison, the premiere of “The Hateful Eight” a week prior at the Hollywood’s Arclight Cinerama Dome drew just four uniformed L.A. officers.

The company had to obtain a permit from L.A.’s Bureau of Street Services to close down the heavily-trafficked boulevard. It will pay for the cost of the extra police presence, as well, a city official said.

The whole article was about the premiere on the 14th. Why would you think that it would be over a week after that?!?

I agree! I hope I look half as good and as in shape as he is when I'm 73. And I don't care what anyone says he still has another Indiana Jones movie left in him! Bring on Indy 5

Episode II had to compete with Spider-Man, that and the fallout of Episode I possibly hampering ticket sales are the only reasons why Star Wars failed to take summer 2002. Spider-Man was the most anticipated film that year. Episode II was a sequel to a somewhat disappointing film. This new film is a whole new beginning, it acts as a continuing story, but also sets out to be a quasi reboot. There's a whole new generation of viewers who actually grew up with the prequels and probably loved them as kids, now they are older and my generation has kids they want to take and experience what we all did when the originals were back in theaters and the advent of the prequels. This is a perfect blending of generations that will go and see this.

Don't forget Sisters.

Actually, I want to see that...but NO film this year has the anticipation that The Force Awakens has had.

Jurassic World broke records and while it was anticipated and had heavy competition (San Andreas, Inside Out, Mad Max, etc) it wasn't nearly as hot as The Force Awakens is. I don't remember dorks lining up over a week in advance for it. Yet it still broke records. Nearly everyone I've talked to wants to see it and many have already reserved their tickets opening weekend. I think it's going to break multiple records.
