I wasn't barmy on it honestly. It's all a bit basic and ultimately set up for the next two films, it's all nice seeing the Millenium Falcon, returning characters and iconography, but practically all the marketing was built around all that. On the flipside, all the effects work are wonderful, the new cast are superb and there was never a moment that felt cheap or hamfisted, it all worked. It just feels like JJ went for the easy route on delivering the fan service over anything challenging.

I'm still trying to pin down my final score on it, but I'll put it like this, for the most part, I was just thinking that I'm more excited for the next instalment over this one.

Can you blame Abrams? I certainly couldn't. With all the fan vitriol out there, and we know JJ pays attention to this kind of feedback, I'm glad he played VII close to the vest. Get this next trilogy off the ground with a bang, and let the creative branches grow a bit more with VIII and IX.

You're right, I don't blame him. After the Prequels, safe and secure is the way you're going to go. But the whole film felt very tightly restrained, I was waiting for it to break loose and really sweep me up, but at the end I was admiring all it's technicals and the way the film's designs capture the retro look of the originals over the film itself. It's obviously working it's magic on a lot of people but for me it was just 'can we get to the next storyline because I know where all this is heading?' But a part of the can be blamed on the rabid fandom and the love of spoiling everything around films.

It infuriates that there are trolls out there purposely spoiling the film on places totally unrelated to Star Wars. Seriously, how much of a d*** do you have to be to get a kick out of ruining a very important film experience for someone?

I saw a review that went along those lines, that it's "the best disappointing movie ever". I mean, they LOVED it for what it is, but it's part rehash and part sequel bait and doesn't say anything new - which was the whole point I guess! We've seen Jurassic World do the same thing (only worse) and that ransacked the box office, so Ep VII is on course for even greater dominion.

It should be interesting to see how Rian Johnson handles VIII (as director/screenwriter) and IX (as screenwriter).

Abrams will be a producer on VIII. I do wonder if Abrams will stay on with the franchise past that (as he is still a producer on the Mission Impossible films and will likely continue to be a producer on the Star Trek film series).

Pretty much, it's like it couldn't not disappoint for me. I'll likely be seeing it again down the line so it'll probably work better second time around. But honestly, I kinda enjoyed Jurassic World more, it's the worse film out of the two, it's trashier and less heartfelt, but it did feel like it let loose overall.

What scene was filmed in IMAX? Is it the falcon being chased by tie fighters on jakku?

Hopefully that isn't too spoiler territory

Saw it this morning and even if it took me at least 15 min to really get into the film (for a short while, I wondered if the "not-so-young" fan would still feel the magic of the force), in the end I really enjoyed it. Pretty all the new characters are great (special mention to Daisy Ridley who plays Rey -
[Show spoiler]her lightsaber fight with Adam Driver in the snowy forest is absolutely terrific !
), the return of the old & loved ones is quite moving and there's quite a lot of pieces of bravura so you don't get bored for a second. And my eyes have been also really pleased to see some good ol' practical effects. In fact, the only (little) complain I'd have is maybe about the story which I didn't find that surprising (
[Show spoiler]Han Solo's death for example is super predictable
) and for now, I'm not fond of the new great vilain, Snoke. Apart from that, it's a quite solid new episode that really makes you want to see the next one,
[Show spoiler]especially because of the final scene re-introducing the one & only Luke Skywalker
. Gave it a 8/10.

Saw it Thursday at 0001 in Germany. I'll say what I feel is important to the experience: I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, didn't want it to end, and have already booked my family with additional tickets for today, Saturday, and Monday based on their (and my) desire to go back for more. And I'm not a 'hard core' SW fan. I believe this factor will help this movie do very well at the box office. Well done, JJ, cast and crew.

That sums it up perfectly for me.Would have given it 4.5/5 if it were possible, but a strong 4 out of 5 for me.I think he was as much reviving the franchise after the last batch of dreadful movies as well as setting it up for the trilogy.
[Show spoiler]Ballsy to kill off one of the main characters of the entire series, but atleast it was done in a logical way.
It also ran abit close to the first movie (you all know what I mean who've seen it),and it felt like the movie dropped the ball abit in the middle part if I can use such an expression, but it was a great ending IMO and a good setup for the next one.How nice was it to see all that detail when thinking back to the first movies.Loved that part of the movie, and characters stayed real and interesting.

Only bad thing:I can't seem to get worked up to see it again, but some movies are like that.

If you watched one of the featurettes you might have noticed that the IMAX camera was
[Show spoiler]pointing inside the Falcon's cockpit. I haven't seen the film, but I'll assume it's that scene. Would be interesting to see the Falcon's crew in IMAX!
