That Abrams was able to get us interested in not one but two uniformed stormtroopers is amazing. We're talking about a franchise where the foot soldiers are the most expendable thing in the universe and go down like tissue paper. Bravo.

You're kidding right? People get banned because they act like obnoxious twats who cannot countenance any opinions other than their own, and that counts for prequel haters (Elvis) as much as it does prequel defenders (Nada).

Also, it is well established that you are a prequel hater, so why would you care about the truth?!?
Don't be daft. I don't really care enough about Star Wars to be a hater. But other than that, I grew up with the prequels more than the original trilogy. I will admit I feel like they soured my whole outlook on the franchise after I've grown up, but I admire stuff to them. But I'm not quite seeing how that really equates to anything, other than an excuse to dodge my point.

Incorrect. It is MORE awesome the second time. You must not have watched it properly. Now go back and see it a third time.

I saw it last night.

I thought it was ok / good, wasn't horrible, wasn't amazing.

One of my main problems with the film was the CGI and the overuse of it. I thought the first 30 minutes were great, then the first
[Show spoiler]chase scene takes place with the Falcon
and all that underplayed, down to earth, location shooting went out the window, and its replaced by whip pans, crash zooms, the "camera" moving into hyperactive positions, all done by CGI of course. It doesn't need it. I don't need the Millenium Falcon to whip by the "camera" with 3mm clearance and then have the camera spin and then chase blah blah blah. Those kind of camera moves really stick out for me as there is part of my brain that can tell when these kind of "camera moves" take place, that no real camera could do those kind of movements, so they must obviously be CGI. I am all for CGI for things like removing wires, removing people / puppeteers or enhancing modelwork, however when the whole scene is created in CGI, I can still tell its fake.

There were things I liked. I liked Kylo Ren, I thought his costume design was very nice and I liked his voice too, took quite a few cues from Darth Vader of course, but I liked it.

I thought Daisy Ridley was fantastic as Rey. Likewise with John Boyega / Fin, great performance from both actors. I think the whole film was good, much better than the hateful prequels, in that the acting was overall excellent, the story was coherent and easy to follow and I thought the film had some good humour.

If I wasnt with a group, I would have walked out midway through

So this is what desperation looks like. And in many ways I hate that I contributed to this film's box office. I wish I could turn back time and never give this a chance and listen to George Lucas' warning.

This was worse then the prequels. And I sincerely apologize to Lucas for every criticizing them in the way I did after seeing how bad it really can get. This is a big budget fan-made Star Wars film. The script of this film...did it even get a second pass? The amount of contrived moments littered throughout this soulless mess was shocking - especially for a film of this scale.

Can we get over that 90% of the plot is based around a stupid MacGuffin? Oh the writers really tried hard with this one. What a boring movie they wrote. Lame action, forced humor, nothing memorable. What a waste of everyone's time. Introduce a location, blow it up. Introduce a new location, blow it up. Yeah and the rebels only need a dozen fighters to take on this scary, cookie cutter 'order' or whatever they call it. At this point its a matter of respect, and the lack of it shown towards me from Hollywood has passed the breaking point. If these suits destroy Snyder's Batman v Superman, then that will be the end of it.

Dont get me started with the feminism garbage. At least try and be sincere. When you layer it on this thick its obvious your a puppet playing games. You dont care about women's rights, all you care about is public perception. And it shows in your pathetic attempts to 'empower' women. You think showing a woman over power men physically on multiple occassions empowers them? You make me sick Hollywood. You and all your publicity stunts dont fool me. No, not one single bit. Your gutter trash, and dont you ever pretend you arent.

Well, Hollywood got what they want. If this film bombed it would really hurt the only thing they care about, their pockets. All the needle brain critics who rated this high no they would be out of their dime a dozen jobs as well if the movie industry isnt healthy. So they inflated this hunk of lard into something its not. Im sure the suits who are rolling in cash at Disney appreciate it. Lucas had the appropriate term for them.

That is an accomplishment. It's too bad Capt. Phasma was so underutilized. I got the feeling that she was going to be this generations Boba Fett, and she may still be in the upcoming sequels, but I was hoping to see more for her first appearance.

My avatar is irrelevant when it comes to the truth. Even you should understand this.

My point is while it was a blast to watch and Rey is a good new character, I'm a bit iffy on some other points. I DO like action heavy films but this one was a bit over the top with it.
[Show spoiler]Also hope Snoke turns out to be a better villain than hissy fit Skywalker has been so far, he's making Anakin look amazing in comparison. That may be the point actually, Kylo Ren's personality may be something of an apology for how Anakin was handled in the prequels. So now I actually think it's a good thing Abrams is out, assuming of course the next director can lead the franchise down a newer path and find a better balance between action and story.

Saw it today. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It was nothing spectacular. Just more of the same really, but it was far better than the prequels and better than Return of the Jedi. It had some things I wasn't a big fan of, but overall it was good.

I would equate it to a surprisingly good meal from a chain restaurant. Didn't expect much, but it was solid and left me satisfied. Would come back for a sequel.

4/5

And the lens flares were there, but thankfully not as bad as I expected.

I didn't even notice the lens flares. Disney got what they wanted out of Abrams, he gave their franchise a good shot in the arm to get it going, hopefully the next director will give us an ESB level sequel that everyone can appreciate.

Heh, I doubt I'll get to 3 times unless I can line up an IMAX showing of this with Mockingjay somehow on the 10th. Gotta say I think this film would be great in IMAX.

They mostly showed up when they were flying around in the spaceships. I think it was in the tie-fighter that I started noticing them. But they weren't distracting and I probably wouldn't have noticed them if I didn't know the director.

As far as the sequel being ESB, I'm hoping the next movie does not go for "dark." This movie was dark enough.
[Show spoiler]Part of my issues with this movie was how one scene will show the horrors of being a Stormtrooper, then the next is Stormtrooper/Nazi symbolism, and then we get a scene with a cartoon alien woman with thick bifocals spouting expository dialogue. It's too drastic in tone and just makes the serious stuff laughable when you have cartoony characters one moment and then Stormtroopers saluting like Nazis right after.

I meant more I want the sequel to be better than Episode VII. Go for better balance, use fresher material and make the characters better. This was a good start but it could've been better, hopefully Rian Johnson (I think that's his name?) was the right choice. Need to see Looper soon.
