I would accept that, it would explain why Luke went into hiding. Disney would never allow that to happen though. The musical cues mean nothing, those could have been done to throw us off, or it could just be she was trained by Luke. |

I once thought it would be interesting if she turned out to be of Palpatines bloodline, but it was just an interesting, mostly passing thought

See, this is exactly why I hope Rey Isn't Luke's daughter because that would require way too much exposition to try and explain. Luke is a Jedi. I thought Jedi were celibate. Did Luke change the rules and abandon the old ways? If so, why? Whom did he abandon them for? Who was she? Where did she come from? How did they meet? Where is she now? Etc, etc.

I wonder how that works anyway, whether or not Sith have children. Can you imagine a Sith, with the usual Sith values and behavior, attempting to raise a child from birth? If the baby even made it out alive, that would likely result in one extremely messed up, dysfunctional individual; too much to even make a good Sith apprentice. ![]() |

It's somewhat explained in Episode II as well, and it's made abundantly clear when Anakin and Padme first meet in Episode III that if they came out with their relationship that Anakin would be expelled from the Order. That doesn't particularly matter for Luke, though. The old ways of the Order being broken is a huge part of the "balance" that was brought to the Force, and considering Luke acted out of emotional attachment multiple times and adamantly believes he was doing the right thing, it's unlikely he'd adopt that principle in a Order he created. |

Just got the novelisation today and it opens with a quote from the 'Journal of the Whills', which immediately hooked me faster than anything in the movie did
![]() "First comes the day Then comes the night. After the darkness Shines through the light. The difference, they say, Is only made right By the resolving of gray Through refined Jedi sight." It's a bit clunky but it's fascinating to me because it says that light and dark have had their turn and that only "resolving of gray" will make them right, i.e. it'll take someone who can look beyond binary notions of "good" and "evil" to bring dat balance. A cryptic reference to Luke's role in the saga to come, perhaps? |

Hence all the "she's a Mary Sue!" complaints.
Looking back on the films though, the exact same thing can be said about Luke (who's such a goody-good in the original film, and also happens to have a grappling hook just when he needed it, and was such a hotshot pilot that he took out so many TIE fighters and blew up the Death Star) and Anakin (the only human who could ever podrace, and whose marvelous spinning maneuvers allowed him to single-handedly take down the droid control ship). Both also had those moments where the Force was suddenly strong with them and they pulled amazing stuff off. Rey is just following in the same pattern - I'll bet the next film will pit her against some challenges that will reveal her flaws and vulnerabilities more (just like with Luke and Anakin). |
