I might need to see Episode 7 a few more times before it sinks in but I felt like the music just wasn't trying as hard.
I felt the same way upon first viewing of the film. But then I listened to the soundtrack a lot more on its own and while it doesn't have a "Duel of the Fates" or "Imperial March" or even "Across the Stars", it's still a very solid score. It's simply more subtle. It's definitely not as in your face as the other ones, but "Jedi Steps and Finale" is one that's been stuck in my head a LOT these last two months. And March of the Resistance is very very fun.

I think that if Williams is able to continue doing VIII and IX you're going to see these themes expand into something much more memorable as the characters become more powerful.

"Imperial March"
Watching Empire a few weeks ago my g/f said "are they going to play that same intro every single time DV is in a scene?"
"Yes, every damned time."

1 person walking out of the movie, roughly 240 millions tickets sold.

SWTFA, #1 All-Time Domestic Box Office VS The Finest Hours, #3,908 All-Time Domestic Box Office.

$1,986,067,924 VS $14,538,801

I have no problem with anyone walking out on SWTFA.

One of my brother-in-law's did not like it but I did not hold that against him.

Even Alien 3 and Robocop 3 are worth more than a 20 minutes to make a decision.

Ehh, I could tell pretty quickly early on that the pacing was gonna be as quick throughout. If that's his problem with it, he was right to do so.

I enjoyed it, but I'm hoping that VIII has some slower parts that buffs the characters from the cardboard cutouts they are now. As it stands, Kylo was the only character with substance beyond what the actors brought in their portrayals.

EDIT: Also hope the climax is more focused. It was hard to care much about the remake of the trench run when they kept cutting away from it. It felt more obligatory than a exhilarating set piece.

Hhhm, I don't see the point, many movies have soundtracks from the beginning to the end without real interruptions.

The score for TFA was a disappointment, aside from the brilliant Rey's Theme (and whenever its cues were used). Apart from that, I kind of feel silly for putting down ten notes on the CD, lol.

I felt exactly the same way about the finale, but apparently the trench run is supposed to be "background music" so I guess that's just how they do things now.

Agreed on the score too. It's the best darned sonic wallpaper you'll ever hear, but it's sonic wallpaper nonetheless. Hopefully JW can dredge up some of his old magic from somewhere for Ep VIII.

Rey's theme is great. I really like the Jedi Steps track too even though a lot of that is the association with the build up in that scene. Plus it incorporates a lot of the classic themes. Agree with you about the price for the CD though.

Rey's Theme and The Jedi Steps were the only really good tracks. The March of the Resistance was ok, but kinda generic Williams. And yes, the beginning with the Star Wars title sounded awful. Like some high school orchestra recorded those notes. What the hell happened? The end title music sounded just fine.

I'm glad someone's mentioned that (lest it seem like I'm moaning all the time about TFA. Who, meesa?) because I felt the same way about the title music! Perhaps that kinda set the tone for my enjoyment (or lack thereof) of the movie itself? It's like one of those Eastern European knock-off orchestras doing a classic cue, it sounded so cheap and lifeless.

Speaking of generic: the scene when the X-Wings come in over the water had such good energy and the score was just...kinda there. Like background music in a department store. Missed opportunity to really add some additional punch.

That's exactly how I felt. To quote myself from when I wrote down my thoughts on the film after having seen it:

Quote:
The Resistance's attack on Starkiller Base was the only time the films' callbacks to the past bothered me. The X-Wings swooping down over the surface of the planet, bombing it, dodging cannon fire and such feels strangely devoid of the proper dramatic heft you would expect. It feels like it's just going through the motions, rehashing the "heroes taking out the villains' base/superweapon" climax we've seen three times before more out of an adherence to tradition than because the filmmakers truly felt it was the best narrative choice.
It's not even the fact that we've seen it before, it's that it feels strangely mechanical and soulless. It's like they figured "this is how ANH ended and how ROTJ and TPM ended, we have to end it the same way" but without genuinely wanting to. They just put it there and didn't bother giving it any sense of urgency and suspense, it's just something that happens in the background.

I'm only able to look past it because of the lightsaber duel, which is pretty awesome. You can tell that's where their hearts lied and I can't help but think the film would be a bit stronger if that had been the sole focus of the climax. I know intercutting between multiple conflicts has become Star Wars tradition by now, but it doesn't hurt to go back to basics sometimes. Isn't that what this one was all about, anyway?

Slight Spoilers:

With a lot of concern about repeating themes in Star Wars, what's important to keep in mind is, the Rebels are going to have space ships like the X-Wings to attack the enemy with, Lightside vs Darkside with light sabers, Stormtroopers as the expected soldier of the enemy, and what better weapon than a giant planet destroyer could the Empire/First Order create?

Even Lucas, for those who watched the behind the scenes interviews, often cited how he likes to repeat themes (motifs as he refers to them) of the characters and story points. Star Wars IV had a Death Star, and the Empire realized how effective it could be, so they built it again for Return of the Jedi (VI).
Some fans look at a second (and 3rd) Death Star as running out of story ideas, but isn't it practical for an evil empire to create something so destructive? If someone took away a country's nuclear weapons, wouldn't they want to rebuild them again? Even if it's not original?

For those criticizing the new Death Star, what better leverage would you create against the Rebels if you were part of the First Order?

Maybe JJ should have let Ben Burtt apply his "Attack on the Clones re-edit" magic to the soundtrack? Maybe it would have worked better this time .
