I think they made a mistake by focusing on Rey rather than Finn. Nothing to do with misogyny. I think Finn’s storyline (Storm Trooper on the run) was far more interesting than Rey’s storyline. I’ve pretty much seen that storyline. It was a chance to do something new and fresh.

I think focusing on a powerful force-user with some connection to the legacy characters was the way to go. But Finn should have had a very strong B storyline. Instead, he got barely a C storyline. In Trevorrow's Ep. 9 script, he was supposed to lead a trooper uprising on Coruscant. Like many things in that script, better than what we got.
