Boys will be boys. I'm sure it seemed right at the time. I understand it. He was trying to take us to another galaxy, and show it was very different from ours. Unfortunately all it did was show that things just don't look real in the Star Wars galaxy like they do in ours.

Episode II, which will perform like Episode I 3D, should not be a reason to cancel The Little Mermaid, which would've gotten close to TLK 3D.

Episode II has some of the best 3D effects I've ever seen ... its the weakest of the saga (IMO) but the 3D is absolutely amazing!!!

I agree with the first part but not the latter. It would have done Finding Nemo numbers. As time and re-releases pass it's clear that TLK's success was a one-off.

Clones' release date has been there since August, TLM for even longer. Even with Disney now owning Lucasfilm I don't think one alters the plans for the other - otherwise they would just move TLM. It's more likely to be being cancelled is down to each 3D re-release making less than the last - Beauty and the Beast ($47m), Finding Nemo ($41m), Monsters, Inc. ($30m). It's a downward trajectory. I also think that the 3Ding might just not have been working - it's traditionally animated, it's much more difficult to do than BatB or TLK (which used the CAPS system). So perhaps it's a quality thing - I guess we'll see if it makes it to 3D blu-ray.

I think TLK's success was because of it not being available in a home format for 8 years. The same is true with TLM. The other 3D rereleases since TLK have all been available to watch at home.

Not sure I follow you. The Lion King was vaulted in 2005, but copies lingered with retailers long after, and anyone who wanted one could turn to ebay or used on Amazon. The Lion King 3D came to theaters with little competition for family dollars, and the novelty combined with little competition sparked a surprise sensation. No one saw it coming.

Was a dearth of availability of The Lion King to consumers responsible? The film is out there...all over the place...who doesn't own the Lion King or know someone who does? Nah - something else was going on. People who were teens when the film came out were now parents, and just as they did for decades prior with films from Walt's time, the new parents took their new children to the movies they saw when they were young -- and there was a bit of a black hole in terms of competition for family dollars.

I'll give you Monsters Inc was released on Blu just a couple of years ago, and yeah, that probably diluted buyers urgency for theatrical issue. I didn't see it, either. Nemo, though, hadn't been recently reissued, certainly not on Blu.

I'm not saying its the only factor, but BATB, TPM, Titanic, FN, and MI all performed at half or less of what TLK did. What you're talking about could have applied to these movies as well, but it was much easier to watch those at home at the time of their release.

I suppose, but I'll go find the Deadline Hollywood articles about how Lion King opened strong, and because there was no upcoming family films, could wind up playing for weeks. Remember how The Lion King was advertised for two weeks only? Disney didn't exactly stick to that.

I wasn't that impressed with Phantom Menace in 3D to tell the truth. converting older movies to 3D has one fundamental problem - they were never intended to be in 3D. they were intended to be seen on a flat screen and were made that way. If they were planning to show them in 3D originally, i am sure they would have made different choices in how they filmed shots, etc(move in on things, stuff like that).

The interesting thing about Disney animated films that employ the multiplane camera or a simulated multiplane (as in the post-Mermaid films) is that they were essentially 3D shots, without the glasses. Certain shots in Pinocchio, Fantasia and Bambi are simply breathtaking in the use of depth. So I'll give you Star Wars, but I have to say I think The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast in 3D amplify choices that were already there, and they are ofetn breathtaking. Finding Nemo is also outstanding in 3D as spatial relationships are part of the world and the storytelling.

Was there a 2D option for The Phantom Menace? I want to keep taking my son to the Star Wars movies, but if I read that Ep. 2 is as weak as 1, I don't wanna see it that way. It just frustrated me whilst I was watching it, and I wanted to enjoy Star Wars!

I like TPM but AOTC is dreadful. Every one complains about the kid in TPM but he is Sir Lawrence Olivier compared to Hayden Christenson.

TPM is certainly the strongest of the prequels, despite poor attempts at humor and a cast that can't handle green screens. AOTC dialogue is impossible to get over and ROTS feels way too rushed. Plus, TPM has the most classic Star Wars scenes. I'm even tempted to say it bests ROTJ.
