I like JJ's movies but what I don't like about is his use of lense flares (pointing/panning the camera past a bright light). I hope we don't see any of this in the next Star Wars.

Abrams is perfect for this gig. Almost too perfect. He did his prep for this film 4 years ago with Trek '09. Make no mistake, that film has Star Wars written all over it.

Still, even with Abrams at the helm, I just can't get excited for this. This is not Prequel hate. I adore the Prequels to death. It's just, the most important aspect of Star Wars for this viewer is the Skywalker story. For me, it ended with Episode VI. There's nothing left to tell. It's another reason why I haven't watched the Clone Wars series, even though I love the look of it and have heard great things about it. Whatever they do in that series, it affects moments within the Saga and that's not something I'm interested in.

If Abrams was in charge of a new trilogy that delves into a part of the universe that completely unrelated to the Skywalkers but featured Jedi's and Sith's, I'd be over the moon about every aspect of this new lease on life Star Wars has.

But the moment you start fudging with the Skywalker story, I check out.

I hope Star Wars fans who hated the Prequels get what they wanted with this new trilogy that they didn't get with the Prequels. It'd be nice to see positive Star Wars conversations on the web again.

My boys will have to let me know how this new trilogy is because I just can't watch them. And that kind of sucks because JJ's going to rock this hard.

I think that besides Cloverfield which was relying too heavily on gimmicks Abrams is a fairly talented Director, so I'm happy with the choice.

He was only producer on Cloverfield

Written by Drew Goddard and Directed by Matt Reeves

don't be surprised if he becomes executive producer only for the next Trek. if they want this movie out for 2015, he won't be able to work too much on a new Trek unless they want to wait until around 2017 for the next one. and if his Star Wars does well, good chance they will want him to do another one.

Umm there hasent even been an official announcement that Abrams took the gig its widley speculated that he has accepted but as of now nothing is in stone.

According to IGN

Quote:
A new report says that the director for Star Wars: Episode VII has been found and it’s none other than J.J. Abrams. The Wrap is reporting the huge news, saying that Abrams has agreed to direct the highly-anticipated film (to say the least) after months of being courted by new Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy. Just last month, Abrams specifically said he was not going to do the film (indicating he had been asked), but as The Wrap puts it, “The lure of the Jedi was too strong.”

The Wrap goes on to say that Ben Affleck was also in contention for the Episode VII directing gig and speculate how Abrams taking the job might complicate Abrams’ relationship with Paramount, where he’s been directing the Star Trek series, with the second film in the new series, Star Trek Into Darkness, opening this summer. In addition, Abrams has been a producer on the Mission: Impossible series at Paramount, since directing the third film.

The Wrap is a very reliable source for news of this sort, and credit “an individual with knowledge of the production” as their source. They note they reached out to Lucasfilm spokeswoman Lynne Hale, who declined to immediately comment.

The one note of caution here is the recent story about Zack Snyder directing a separate, stand-alone Star Wars film, which was first reported by the also-credible Vulture – only for Snyder’s reps to say it wasn’t true, even as Vulture stood by their sources. Lucasfilm is obviously being secretive with the Star Wars films as negotiations have been going on with directors, so we’ll all be waiting to see when they officially comment on this report that Abrams is the guy making The Movie We’re All Waiting For.

As of now it is still speculation until Both parties officially comment.

Lucas' son has apparently confirmed it on Twitter, so it looks quite likely that it's not just a rumour and has some truth to it. Every credible news source has gone wild with speculation over this, so I'm not surprised that many of them have been wrong -- obviously as soon as they've sniffed out a lead, they've published it as pure fact.

Yeah thats what I was thinking would happen. Its just that Star Trek has finally got the respect it deserves then it gets the carpet pulled out from under its feet. I'm just torn, I love that J.J. got the job because i love Star Wars as much as Trek. But i just don't want trek to lose the quality filmmaking that has brought it back from the dead. At the same time im sure that he is talented enough to be able to oversee both project.

I'm kind of cautious about this choice, if it turns out to be true. While I think JJ is a good director. I, honestly, don't feel he should be running two of Science-fictions biggest franchises. I don't see how he can dedicate his time and passion to both without one suffering. I think he should turn the keys of Star Trek over to someone else if he's going to take Star Wars. He did what he needed to do and that was to kickstart Star Trek again.

Also...a majority of SW/ST fans don't agree with each other to begin with. I'm not speaking for any of them mind you...but if true, this will re-spark the feud over which franchise is better. Some will feel JJ dumped the girl he took to prom for the playboy bunny surrounded by every guy at the dance. It's not how I feel, but I don't see this potentially going well for Star Trek fans...there'll be many other debates, arguments, etc....

If he's the guy, ok then....let's see what he can do and leave Star Trek 3 and forward to other capable directors and writers.

could never figure out why. i like both but they are two totally different ideas. it is like saying you can't like cola and root beer because they are both dark colored pop. it is just strange.

+1. They're both set in space, and that's about all they have to really do with each other.

Allegedly, they don't have a script or a story yet for Trek 3, so we're a long way off from Trek 3 happening, maybe even three years away. Also, we're assuming Abrams would handle all three Star Wars films, when it's possible this is just a deal for SWVII, nothing else.

I agree with both of you as well. I don't see why you have to like one over the other. They're both excellent, why not just enjoy them both, instead of depriving yourself of one over the other.

Agreed While I am more of a Star Wars fan, I still love the ideas and stories of Trek. Never understood why if you like one, you have to hate the other (though friendly banter between the two sides can be amusing ).

Pretty excited of Abrams getting the gig for Ep VII

Abrams directing this has me a bit nervous. He needs to tone it down a notch.

I'm not sure the lens flares are that bad that his directing ability is called into question. Sure, they can get annoying at times, but most of them actually work and give his films a distinctive look.

Also, with Kennedy and Lucas breathing down his neck, I'm pretty sure he won't be allowed to take many liberties with the franchise, anyway.
