I'm wondering what this means for the fan fiction. Lucas was very supportive of fan fiction as long as it wasn't used for profit. On the other hand Disney's lawyers are notorious for thier protection of Disney IP - no matter what the use.

Dunno about "soon", but hopefully we do eventually. Depending on how the unused/removed footage has been abused or ignored over the years, Disney might have some restoration work to do before it can be reintegrated into the existing transfers.

It’s Lucas’ plan to stay retired, but he will serve as creative consultant on new Star Wars films.

Kathleen Kennedy will executive produce. Both are now sitting down with writers to discuss stories.

How can you be so happy about GL not directing/writing? He created the universe. Without him Star Wars would not be.

i remember a quote long ago where he said he destroyed every existing print of the original trilogy so that the special editions, as he originally envisioned SW to be, would be the only versions.

It's not a discussion unless someone brings up the end of the world .

In my mind, that's complete poop - something started on the internet that has now become a commonplace worry, even with no real proof - but I hope that nothing does happen, not least because of this announcement!

The only way you can look forward to a new Star Wars is without him writing or directing (I still like EPIII), Creative consultant is perfect.

Not exactly anything he's ever really said. People took some comments and warped them.

However... what he did do was was have the original negatives cleaned and it was cut up to put in the new scenes for the Special Edition.

He's already said countless times that they'd eventually release the original cuts, but they take a backseat to his preferred vision.

Especially since they require an entire new restoration job... since the restored version was cut up for the new scenes.

Never thought I'd say this about this series that's meant a lot to me but...I'm done.

Never bought into the expanded universe. Never bought into the Clone Wars cartoon. The Star Wars story was and will forever be the story of Anakin Skywalker.

And with this situation, I can truly be done with it. Thank you, George for everything you've contributed to cinema. You deserve a great retirement.

That's true - as bad a rep. as he was given, Lucas did craft a universe that has stood the test of time and become extremely important and influential. I don't agree that it's great he's gone, but I do think it's time the idea was given to someone younger, who can plan for the future more than GL could.

It'll be a shame to never see another SW directed by Lucas, but at least he's involved in the creative aspect in some way!

I was done with Star Wars a long time ago. For me Star Wars is the story of Luke Skywalker. I am only interested in this news if it means I get the versions that I want to watch. Hopefully the new movies aren't as horrendous as the prequels for those of you who still care.

Exactly. It's like the Y2K thing all over again. But just more ancient and exaggerated. And if the world does end up ending... no loss.

If I recall correctly - everything was scanned & digitized after the film was cleaned etc, so restoration shouln't be too difficult - also if I recall the last release before the SE's were much hyped (at the time) restored versions.
