Amen, most of the Star Wars novels are garbage.

Lucas threw away Brackett's draft completely, and start over again with Kasdan.

The time gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope was only 22 years.

lol I think he was referring to the crappy casting decision between Owen, Beru, and even McGregor in that they look way too young in RotS to be the age they look in ANH.

This is one prequel failing that's always been pretty easy to for me to forgive. After all, we know that the Tatooine suns are murder on thesa skin.

The idea of Lucas throwing away scripts sounds horrible. Any other script cant be worse than the ones he created for the prequels.

Don't say that. Never say that. There could be something worse than Jar Jar in there.

I've read excerpts from Brackett's draft, he made the right decision in my opinion. But he still gave her respect by giving her credit for the screenplay. The Empire Strikes Back is still the best in the series.

Who said Lucas threw away the script? Apparently this Toy Story guy can't write.

You forget that he threw away Frank Darabont's awesome-sounding script for Indy 4, yet approved the disaster that was KOTCS.

That script also contained Aliens, if I remember.

Edgerton and Piesse did seem a bit young based on the way the characters appear in ANH, but McGregor works fine. If you figure he was around 25 or so in TPM, then he'd be in mid-to-high 30's in AOTC, and 40 in ROTS, greying hair and all. So that would make him about close to 60 in ANH, which is believable.

I've read Darabont's draft. Not a bad script (quite boring actually), but nothing better than Koepp's.

because every script written was still based on Lucas' ideas, including several very specific scenes he insisted be in the script (most of them awful).

A lot of those story ideas, like the bit with the refrigerator, were actually recycled from old Back to the future ideas.

The Empire Strikes Back or Raiders of the Lost Ark were based on Lucas's ideas as well and they turned out great. My point is, it's a collaborative work. Lucas sat down with Kasdan brainstorming for many weeks for Empire. And from the Indy making of books, Spielberg insisted to keep the refrigerator scene in Skull, and he even wanted Toht to have a robotic arm in Raiders.

Just a few updates, reminders and corrections to some recent posts:

-Kasdan was not the original writer for Empire Strikes Back, he was the secondary/backup... Leigh Bracket wrote up a first draft screenplay (or at least a partial one) until she died in 1978. Lucas turned down Bracket's first draft, he didn't like it. Kasdan was given Bracket's draft work and went from there. Some of Bracket's ideas ended up being used down the road for the "Shadows of the Empire" story.
-Georgio Lucas is officially back on the Star Wars VII team, as a creative consultant. can't remember the first source i heard it from, but it is also on IMDB
-Some people need to rewatch Star Wars episode 2 and 3 again, and count the lens flares... there is actually quite a bit in space scenes.
-George gave up his original drafts to K. Kennedy for the 7-9 trilogy, that's what they are basing the new story on. What, on the other hand, is in them is anybody's guess. Someone said, I think in an interview with J.J. himself, that it will be a new story (non-EU) based on George's past ideas.

I agrree. It's the same old case with the internet where what could have been is always better than what was but, looking at the script in an unbiased way, it had just as many problems as the Koepp version. A decent script but flawed. We'd be sat here moaning about the drunken, goofy riff on the Raiders opening if they'd gone with Darabont's script.
