Don't talk to Cinemaphile about personality, if it was up to him, most films would be characterless drivel.

Director J.J. Abrams says, "We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud."

Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.

okay but was anyone really expecing anything different? So we now have some confirmation of the new names but considering the original writer was let go because his version didn't contain enough of the original stars, are we really that surprised? Not trying to be a downer here but this is Hollywood ringing that bell and people are drooling over stuff they already know.

I do think JJ will do a better job here than he did on Trek but just because you are not a fan of something doesn't mean you do the crappy job he did with Trek. I don't think it is a matter of him not finding his voice, this is his voice but until now he had to try and adapt things to fit that voice which is why his Trek films look more like Star Wars demos than actual films. I am still not sold that he will do a good job and not a big budget fan film but time will tell.

Happy the Attack the Block guy get the role, exciting to see a blockbuster that already certain to make bank hire reasonably unknowns to launch into the limelight.

I think Adam Driver will do decently, I understand the anxiety towards him however. Oscar Isaacs should be great, and Serkis is really exciting to have involved. Still not quite convinced the original characters need to be there but we'll see, if they're put to good use it should be exciting.

**** it, the entire thing is exciting, it now feels like we'll get a new Star Wars film. I've fallen out of love with all Star Wars films as of recently so I'm pretty stoked this announcement has me pumped, and I'm looking forward to watching the original trilogy again on Sunday.

I can't believe people are just now figuring out why Abrams was hired. The dude apes other directors styles arguably better than the original directors currently do. For example, Super 8. Now that's not to say the original directors are wrong, they've just changed artistically. Abrams is the director you call when you want to tap into nostalgia like Disney does here.

Not this time. My wife and I have had plenty of conversations about this. She's trying to guilt trip me into taking my boys to see this. My oldest likes Star Wars now after showing him the films so he really wants to see this new film.

Their mother will have to take them. I'm the party pooper.

Being a parent means you sometimes have to go see movies you don't want. Just part of the game. Seems kind of silly to get this worked up over a movie. I bet you'll enjoy it at least a little bit. If nothing else, do it for the kids because those are the things parents are supposed to do.

Random thoughts:

1) No Lando? I guess you could argue that his character arc was completed in ROTJ(he redeemed himself by helping to save Han and defeat the Empire), but so was Han's in a way and he's back.

2) Max von Sydow is old. I hope he's not intended to be around for the entire trilogy cuz I don't want a Richard Harris/Dumbledore situation here.

3) Please God no Force ghosts for Ewan as Ben and especially Hayden as Anakin! Leave that part of the saga in the past where it belongs.

4) I know this isn't gonna happen, but I wish Disney would pay Fox a few millions bucks for the rights to their studio logo and the Alfred Newman fanfare to lead into the Lucasfilm logo. It's just not gonna feel right having a Star Wars movie opening without that music.

For me the most pleasing part is that Ian McDiarmid is not on the list, which means no reborn Emperor (which was rumoured a while back). This would have IMO really reduced the importance of what happened in 1-6.

Still cautious as Disney seems a bit too fanatic to please OT fans and I do hope that it dares to venture in new directions like the PT did and isn't a simple rehash of the OT. Even though it wasn't warmly received by a lot of people, the PT had quite some interesting ideas and the design was great (just as with the OT) so I hope we will also see this in the ST.

Boyega could potentially be playing Lando's relative...a long shot but it could be in there.

If it does come to Sydow passing away (let's hope not...a legendary thespian on an international scale) my shout would be Christopher Plummer to replace him. I didn't really watch the Potter films but Gambon replacing Harris was a good shout from the producers.

Agree with the other comments too.

I'm excited for both Oscar Isaac's and Max von Sydow's involvement more than anybody else. Andy Serkis will be great either in the flesh or as a mo-cap addition. Gleeson, Driver and Boyega are good up-and-coming actors and I am interested how they will work with this material...Gleeson in particular seems to be showing up in everything these days and I hope he gets a meaty role.

My dream come true would be the return of a certain Mandalorian, of course...or if not, someone to take revenge for his death.

I wish they would have an overture before the movie starts, similar to star trek: the motion picture, 2001 etc.

The story was already done before Disney bought Lucasfilm. Lucas and Abrams were working pretty close too, so anything that was done, was on his watch. So if anyone is too fanatic about the OT, it's Lucas and Abrams.

People keep taking jabs at Disney, afraid they'll ruin things, but this is really a Lucasfilm production. Disney doesn't put their hands in unless things get messy. They've left Marvel to their own devices as well.

I'm under the impression that they basically don't need to mention anything from the prequels and the story would go on just fine. Nothing from the prequels really added anything to what was already there, so most if not all of what occured can just be forgottern.

Let's hope not. Even the original trilogy hardly mentions the prequels(in part because Lucas hadn't written them yet), so why would movies set another 30+ years later delve into them?

Plus, Kathleen Kennedy is producing and I trust her more than anyone else involved really, outside of Hamill.

I was reading an interview in Cinefex conducted in 1999 with Lucas and he talks about the reason that he waited so long to get the Prequels under way and it wasn't only because he wanted to wait for the technology to catch up to what he wanted to do with the Prequels, but that he was raising his children during that time and funding a lot of other peoples creative visions in the process, effectively making his family larger and larger. He says that if he hadn't of gone into the Prequels at that point, after his kids had grown up and no longer required his undivided attention, he wouldn't have done them at all, because of the time it takes to complete something of such breadth and depth. I deeply respect the man because more than anything, he's very humble, easy-going and really hasn't changed that much in the last 30 years. Same clothes, same beard, same attention paid to his friends and family over everything else in his life. I'm glad he was able to contribute as much as he could, which I imagine was quite a lot, to this new trilogy and I wish him the best, whether that be living a quiet life with his family and/or creating smaller more diverse pictures the way he wants them.

That cast is pretty great. Of the known actors I have no problems with any of them. Plus, I loved Oscar Isaac in Inside Llewyn Davis, so that's a big win in my book.
