I like it. Sith must've been considered extinct by this time, but something happened that reminds everyone of them. Fear of the darkside is back.

About the genre, this is how I see it:

1. Sci-fi - features advanced science & technologies created by humans of our world i.e. Minority Report, Sunshine, etc.

2. Sci-fi/fantasy - features advanced science & technologies not created by humans of our world i.e. Star Wars

The Ancient Fear?

I would have called it Rise of the Jedi.

It's alright. Better than the 'Order of the Jedi' title that was going around. At least it sounds a bit different.

Rise of the Jedi after Return of the Jedi? We already know the Jedi has returned so their rise is a given, in my opinion.

I think this episode should be about evil coming back to the galaxg after being destroyed in the last Episode. Something familiar that existed since the ancient times.

That title is very suspect. For one, it doesn't fit with the rest of the episode titles (i.e. referring to something in the past instead of the present: A New, Strikes Back, Return, Phantom Menace, Attack of, Revenge of). Something in the vein of '.....of the empire (if the villain is from the empire).

It makes sense to me, the first film of the trilogy is always something vague or unspecific (The Phantom Menace, A New Hope). Second film referring to military actions by a group of people (Empire, Clones) and the final film referring to the achievements of the core characters (Sith, Jedi).

Presumably, this ancient fear is returning in some way or has been a continuing issue, so it would be referencing something in the present. Just because the fear has been around for a long time doesn't mean it's not still a current fear or couldn't become a current fear again.

I like Star Wars Episode VII: The Search for More Money. It's refreshingly honest.

That made me chuckle. Thanks for that.

As far as 'The Ancient Fear' goes, I like it quite a bit. I won't get too attached to it until we have some sort of official announcement, but I hope it sticks.

Is this going to be like the "Revenge of the Jedi" red herring or "Blue Harvest" from '83?

Problem with Star Wars is that the first 3 films are fantasy for the most part - the lightsabers are never explained, the force is pretty mystical, etc. But when Lucas tried to explain things a little in the prequels and make it sci-fi, people flipped out. I don't feel that the force itself makes it fantasy - ESP and such would explain it somewhat. I think it is fantasy based more off the fact that it is set so long ago yet more advanced, you have everyone speaking thier own language yet they understand each other just fine, plus the things like the force, lightsabers, etc. Add them all up and it is fantasy.
Personally, I couldn't care less about any anal OCD arguments over whether it's Sci-Fi, Speculative Fiction or Fantasy. But one point you raised - the issue of different languages is one that I think just about every film involving aliens glosses over and never explains. Films like Star Trek have humans meeting certain alien races for the first time, yet they can understand them via their "universal translators". Although it's impossible to conceive how advanced computers will become even 100 years from now, never mind 300 to 500 years from now, I always felt that the concept of a "universal translator" was a cop-out.

And even though here on planet earth, humans eventually found a way to communicate with each other despite language differences, like when Europeans first met Native Americans, I can't even conceive of how difficult that must have been. I always felt that a brave SciFi film would be one in which two races have absolutely no idea what the other race is trying to communicate.

Revenge of the Jedi wasn't a red herring. It was actually going to be the title. But it wasn't until Lucas realized that the Jedi would never seek revenge, that he changed it. Just had to be clear.

You can even see the teaser trailer that promoted the movie that way. This is from the official Star Wars youtube page:

Wasn't that close to a joke in Mel Brooks' Spaceballs?

Revenge of the Jedi wasn't a red herring. It was the actual title (there are even some production jackets with that title) until someone reminded Lucas that revenge wasn't very Jedi like, since revenge was usually based upon anger and anger led to the dark side (which I always found irrational anyway).

I guess that I was implying that they changed the name by the time "Return" of the Jedi was released. I know that Lucas stated that it was because a Jedi doesn't seek revenge, but don't you think that he would have realized that prior to putting that title to so many products?

Back in the day, I heard that it was an attempt to catch people counterfeiting Star Wars merchandise by releasing a fake title early.

Obviously, 'Blue Harvest' was created to keep people from snooping around the set as they were filming.
