There are some in TPM, you can tell because they look much better than the CGI garbage like Watto.

By AotC they were virtually gone though, senile old man Lucas wouldn't even allow an actual stormtrooper costume to be made.

Yeah, that Yoda in Episode 1 sure looked better than Watto or Jar-Jar, let me tell ya.

There were puppets in Clones and Sith too. But I like Watto's character, the voice actor really brought life to him. The design was cool too.

Was there a link provided earlier in thread describing the "confirmed cast"? I know I'm late to the party but I wanted to see who all was going to be casted.

The Yoda scenes in Empire are as close to perfect cinema as you can get. It's got the best puppet work in the history of the movies, and some the best cinematography and music as well. Those scenes are emblematic of a team of extremely talented artists working together and every single one of them brought their A-game. Stuart Freeborn, Frank Oz, John Williams, Peter Suschitzky, and Mark Hamill all did as good as or better than anything else they have ever done. It's the textbook definition of classic.

But man it would have been SO MUCH better with Hamill in a green room pretending to be trained by a CGI Yoda hopping around like a frog.

I agree. The puppet in Empire is probably the greatest I've ever seen. It never even feels like a puppet; it's movement is so fluid it looks real.

Agreed, I want those scenes in Empire to be just how they are. George Lucas himself has said he won't change anything there even before he sold Lucasfilm. That said, I'm not against CGI for the new film. CGI can be fine or better if done right, many examples but the first image came to my mind is Davy Jones, what a remarkable job done there I first thought it was real animatronics (though animatronics kind of hard to get that fluid movements).

Love the puppet alien. Can't believe there are people who prefer terrible CGI. You guys are grade A trolls I'm assuming

I'm fine with CGI in the sequel, as you mentioned, when done right it can look really good.

Davy Jones was impressive and a great example of CGI being used to enhance real photography of a live action actor. Correct me if I'm wrong, but most of that character was live action and makeup.

It also helps that he's an awesome, memorable design.

So a man and a puppet sitting in a swamp talking about a mystical force is the best cinematography out there?

Lots, but in Star Wars alone, the scenes with the Emperor in ROTJ are my favorite cinematically.

Agreed. This was the very first time I got worried about this new movie and it's stuck with me. There was no reason for it.

Completely the opposite reaction for me and my local friends who saw the video. When I saw the puppet I thought it looked like Star Wars was going in the right direction.

But what if the puppet was really CGI and an elaborate attempt to fool everyone and demonstrate his realistically they can make a character look like a puppet without requiring any actual puppet.
