New rumors:

[Show spoiler]
  • There will be a female villain. Over 50% sure she's a Sith. I'll follow up on this in later weeks.
  • Despite having 30 Years after Jedi to set one up, there is NO New Republic at the start of Episode VII.
  • Boba-Fett-similar armor is around. Probably not for the man himself. Mandalorians? Clone drama? Still unclear on a plot/character connection.
  • John Boyega isn’t a Jedi or a Padawan at the beginning of the movie, he’s the one that has the story arc that brings him into Star Wars’ greater universe. It has echoes of Luke’s arc in A New Hope.

A female villain would be quite cool. We haven't really had one with any kind of important role. Zam Wesell is really the only one that comes to mind, and she's just around for a few minutes at the beginning of AOTC.

Mandalorians? I'd be okay with that.

No new Republic though? Hmm. This is one thing where I wonder if maybe they'll try too hard to stay true to the OT and avoid callbacks to the PT. As long as they can come up with a good explanation for it. I can buy that they'd want to avoid going back to the exact same system that could become so corrupted the first time around.

It's definitely Lucas. I mean, Natalie Portman went on to win an Oscar after these films. Do you realize how embarrassing it is that an Oscar-caliber actress gave such a wooden and lifeless performance in his movies?

Lucas himself admits he doesn't like directing, and he has a weird view on how to do it-- he makes actors stick to his script word-for-word with no allowances for improv or creative ideas. Basically, actors to him are no different than the props and special effects he puts in. Plus his directing is very lazy, with very basic A-Cam/B-Cam shots and lack any kind of energy during scenes with characters interacting with each other.

I like George Lucas a lot-- he's a really intelligent guy and he's done a lot of great achievements for movies and for global causes. But I have to say the main reason his Prequel trilogy had so many problems is because he just isn't a very good director or script-writer. He should have swallowed his pride a bit and not assumed total control on those films.

Should have had Gary Kurtz around since he was the genius of SW and TESB.

Welllll, if the The Clone Wars series is to be considered canon, and I believe Lucas recognizes it at such, then you have to include Asajj Ventress (dark assassin) along with female bounty hunter Aurra Sing as villains.

I coudnt have said it better than you - those are the exact reasons why the prequels are not that good. All he had to do was let his Clone Wars cartoon directors/screenwriters make those prequels and they would have had more life.

Not exactly. Naval ships like the U.S.S. Enterprise, built in the 1960s, were only recently decommissioned. The 747 is still in production. B-52 bombers are still in active service and probably will remain so for another 20 years, nearly 80 years after they were built.

Also, the Falcon was a "piece of junk" mostly because Han was always broke and could barely afford to keep her flying. Presumably, he's flush in Ep. VII. Realistically, the ship could not only be flying, but should be restored to cherry condition.

Who likes the idea of combining practical effects and CGI and not over abuse CGI like the prequels did? i love this idea and make it old fashioned style.

ooooo, that's exciting - it will rank right up there with the Khan surprise

Let's be clear - I didn't hate JJ's Trek films because they were different - if that was the case, I shouldn't have liked TNG-Enterprise as those were different than the original. As well, I have no problem with the fan done ones like Phase 2. My issue with JJ"s Trek films have always been that they are just poorly written films that change random things to make it "accessible" to the audience which means putting in Nokia phones, cars and rock music even though they are totally out of context. It was a waste of potential. That's my concern here - instead of taking the opportunity to take Star Wars in a new and exciting direction, we are going to end up with the ultimate fan film which crams in as much of the original trilogy that he can fit so people get that warm and fuzzy feeling from watching it and ignore that the story is underwhelming. Maybe he will surprise me - he has admitted that he was never really a Trek fan and more of a Star Wars fan so maybe he will do a better job here but after seeing his Trek films, I am concerned.

And Auditor55, how do you know you have never seen a LGBT captain? If it is just a part of life, do they need to sit there with a sign advertising it?

I don't know I really enjoyed the two Treck movies that he did. If not for him I would have never picked up The Original Series as I always thought that Trek was crap. Once I got it though I blew through all three seasons in a few days and enjoyed every second of it.

The answer as to why she won an Oscar afterwards could be something as simple and obvious as "she got better." Of course, her acting skills in the Thor movies (post Oscar) are more reminiscent of her Star Wars role than her Oscar winning role.

There are plenty of Oscar winners who were terrible before they won, and were just as terrible after.

The true test of a good actor/actress is that they are incredible despite being in a terrible role, and Portman does not fall into this caliber of talent. At all.

Fandering.

But fear not, there is no doubt in my mind there will be a LGBT introduced in the upcoming Star Wars film, if a popular character we've already seen isn't retconned into being one, that is.
