The Indiana Jones actor was first thought to have fractured his ankle during filming in England earlier this month (Jun14), when his foot was crushed by the door of a spacecraft prop.
However, his injury turned out to be a broken leg, with reports suggesting he would be out of action for up to eight weeks. It has now emerged that he will not be able to return to film Star Wars: Episode VII for six months as he needs rehab treatment for his left limb, which was fixed with a number of metal plates during surgery this week (beg16Jun14).
A source tells The Sun newspaper, "Shooting is continuing, but Harrison won't be back for months... the film company is looking into extending filming well into the second half of this year to allow Ford time to get back on his feet."
Ford is still receiving treatment at a hospital in England but will fly back to Los Angeles with his actress wife Calista Flockhart to work with a physiotherapist, according to editors at the publication.
well good thing JJ is using all those practical effects - just imagine how long the rehab would be from a cgi door!

My 60 year old dad broke his leg and ankle a few years ago. Had to have surgery and a metal rod, plates, screws and wire mesh put in. He still walks with a limp and has to use a cane. Hopefully Harrison Ford's isn't that bad. But being 70 years old isn't going to help any. Hope he gets well and and is able to return to Star Wars and that it doesn't affect his real life as well.

My aunt is nearly 80 and last year broke both of her legs, had metal rods put in, and about 8-10 weeks later was walking around very well. It depends a lot on the person and the type of break. Hopefully Ford's wasn't that bad of a break and he recovers quickly. He's in excellent shape for a man his age and is a total workhorse, so I imagine he'll be back to shooting in half the time they've estimated or less. He nearly suffered through severe back pain on Temple of Doom and was back shooting after a just a little over a month if I remember.

Harrison Ford suffered a severe spinal disc herniation while riding elephants. A hospital bed was brought on set for Ford to rest between takes. Lucas stated, "He could barely stand up, yet he was there every day so shooting would not stop. He was in incomprehensible pain, but he was still trying to make it happen."[7] With no alternatives, Lucas shut down production while Ford was flown to Centinela Hospital on June 21 for recovery.[15] Stunt double Vic Armstrong spent five weeks as a stand-in for various shots.

The dude is one tough guy.

I have heard him say in an interview once that he pushes through injuries because other people involved in making the film (like set decorators and grips, etc) are depending on income from that movie, so he feels responsible for ensuring the movie gets made.

Gotta love that thought process.

In fact, a few years ago when Shia LaBOOOOF was in his car wreck and messed his hand up, I've heard that Shia and Ford talked and Ford pressed upon Shia that he needed to keep working, which he did.

As for Ford's broken leg, do we know which bone it was? Both? If it was the fibula, I can see that being a shorter recovery time, but if it was the tibia, then maybe it will take 6 months... but until we get confirmation, I'm hoping for the 8 week range.

Tough or not, this sounds like he damaged his leg pretty bad. Six months is not an exaggeration. Not to mention the fact that everyone on site is probably still troubled by the incident. Professional or not, they are still human.

A December 2015 release date is unlikely.

That said, the summer of 2016 is way too full right now. But how about March or April of 2016? Alice In Wonderland and Hunger Games did extremely well in March. Winter Soldier is outdoing every summer release this year and came out in April.

True or not plays a big part in the rest of your post. If the six months is true, the date becomes unlikely. But it's The Sun, after all. You need buckets of salt with anything they report. I highly doubt the injury is that bad. But if it is, I wait until we hear something official otherwise.

Well, this probably puts Indiana Jones 5 as an impossible mission.

I wouldn't dismiss it though. Even JJ, KK, and the entire crew have no idea when they'll be able to get going again with Harrison's scenes. And they won't for a long while.

But doctors have to make the call they feel fit for the well being of the patient, even if the doctor is a huge Star Wars fan.

Again, it's all hearsay though. This is coming from a tabloid. Movies deal with things like this, you rearrange the shoot, and move ahead. Things like Avengers: Age of Ultron had to rearrange their shoot around Scarlett Johansson being pregnant, and the movie is on track for its release date. Depending on what needs to be shot, Ford can still shoot some of his material, and the rest of the shoot can be rearranged to keep it on track. That's how it works. It's not the end of the world, nor of the production.

But this is all hypothetical, since again, this is from a tabloid. So there's a good chance this is all not true. We know he broke his leg, but outside of Temple of Doom, Ford has been known to work through his injuries. The six month thing is just a rumor. Wait until something official is said until you begin to panic.

I thought it was funny how I first read Ford had hurt his ankle, then his pelvis, than his knee!

Lucasfilm has already said no change in release date. The tabloid injury speculation is a waste of time and ink.

From the Herald Sun

Quote:
N NEWS set to rile up Star Wars fans, Tom Cruise is in talks to make a cameo appearance in the eagerly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII. According to The Sun , Cruise met up with his close friend JJ Abrams (who directed the star in Mission Impossible: III) in London to discuss the project. “Tom has been in London for over a week and met up with JJ and some other people from Star Wars at the weekend,” a source told the newspaper. “On Saturday evening five of them met up for dinner and drinks at the Belgravia Hotel. JJ loves working with Tom whenever he gets the chance.”

Abrams’ production could do with a bit of star power after Harrison Ford (who reprises his iconic role as Han Solo from the original trilogy), was rushed to hospital following an accident on set, and is going to be out of action for several months. The source added: “Losing Harrison is going to set things back a little scheduling wise and there’s some time to play around with.” For his part, Cruise recently starred in the critically acclaimed Edge of Tomorrow, and is preparing to film the fifth instalment of the Mission: Impossible franchise.

I hate that there is no official response, I know Harrison has his own privacy rights.

But if I had the same injury, I would let the world know.

Is it a legal concern on both sides? Could Harrison sue Lucasfilms for the injury?

Why would he? I doubt it was due to negligence, and even if it was I'm sure they'd take care of him. Plus they are insured, so he will get paid either way.

I am not saying he will sue, I am just wondering why they give the world full access to the injury. Patient privacy rights? Why doesn't Harrison just say "here is what happened and I will be back in x weeks or x months?

It just seems so weird...

I'd actually like to see Tom in Star Wars, even if it was a small role.

Glad to hear they're going to be shooting M:I:5 soon.
