According to the DVS track on the Blu-ray, what's shown tumbling away from Cloud City as Luke looks down isn't his hand. It's a piece of a weather vane (or something similar) that is knocked loose. (I learned this while reviewing the Blu-ray set for another site.) It's way too big to be a hand (look at it in scale with the stalk), and something the size of a hand wouldn't be visible for that long.

Well, if that thing isn't his hand, then it's in Cloud City in a chute somewhere. In any case, I can totally buy his hand making it out in one piece (but not surviving re-entry into a planet's atmosphere from space, because even for Star Wars that's dumb).

I know Faraci is never going to own up to being made a fool, but it's still going to be sweet as hell when the truth comes out.

What gets me is that people have issues not believing Luke's hand could survive re-entry into an atmosphere without burning up, but don't have any problems believing in a laser sword that can produce a 6-7 ft beam of light that can cut through virtually anything. Newsflash!!! It's all fake. I'm not saying that Luke's hand returning is a good idea, but you have to understand that these movies are filled with ideas that go against the laws of physics. It's science FICTION, not science FACT!

The internal logic of the movies requires a huge suspension of disbelief, yes, but we've seen moments in the previous movies where objects burn when entering an atmosphere. So the hand and lightsaber remaining intact violates that internal logic.

I just have a major issue with believing anyone making a SW movie could even ponder the idea of having a hand with a lightsaber floating through space. Whether the physics works or not the idea is laughable and preposterous.

(Remember, Luke's hand simply tumbles into Bespin's atmosphere, it didn't get destroyed in Empire so it's totally plausible that it survived in that manner, getting frozen by the atmosphere and then found by some enterprising Imperial lackey or space pirate.)

I also like the cloned Luke idea (Jesus Christ, did I actually just agree with nagys?), perhaps matey escapes with the proof of THE hand and desperately needs to get to the New Republic to warn them of the danger. But he's intercepted, much like Leia was in Star Wars, and picks up some stragglers who come along for the ride. They eventually make it to Coruscant and that's when they realise that they need to bring old Luke out of hiding in order to combat the new threat. Hell, if Solo is to die in this one then it'd be awesome if Clone Luke is the one that kills him. Cue "Nooooooooooo!", and real Luke then fights his clone in the climactic lightsaber duel.

This is of course very similar to Heir of the Empire, but some folks consider Zahn's Thrawn trilogy to be the sequels anyway, so a few nods in that direction would be very, very cool IMO.

Maybe our new twosome are stranded on Tatooine, during a sandstorm and they take shelter in Obi-Wan's old residence? I'm sure he's had loads of plot propelling crap lying around. Darth Maul's busted light-sabre, Qui-Gon's light-sabre, Darth Maul's bottom half for puppet-shows and a few adult Holocron's tucked under his mattress ....

Didn't Family Guy tell us what happened to Luke's hand?

I hope there is a new Death Star and it starts by blowing up tatooine so we never see it again. What a horrible place that apparently everything important ever must happen on.

If Tatooine is blown up by a new Death Star it can't take place in the beginning because Luke would have to be stranded on a near by planet so he could watch.

You guys are still talking about that hand rumor? JJ isn't that stupid, come on guys.

No director could ever make something like that work, and I don't think JJ plans to start this new trilogy off with potentially the most unintentional laugh in the franchise. The audience would erupt with laughter if that was the opening scene.

We're now at the point where we're just making fun of the people trying to rationalize how it could work. It'll be awhile before that gets old.
