To be completely surprised, you would avoid articles, forums, and yes--teaser trailers--because teasers and trailers ALWAYS reveal something that would have surprised you later in the film. Maybe not drastically, but seeing Darth Maul dancing around in the trailer took away from the 'surprise' you could have had when he first was revealed to you.
It's all semantics, because in the end, the information was stolen and leaked. That's wrong no matter what your views on spoilers and surprises are. I can say I'm not active in the discussions in this thread for the very reasons you've stated, because I don't want to stumble into information I don't want to know. So, I see it best to avoid spoiler tags and not engage in some of these details conversations. Even so, I don't like when these leaks occur, no matter what film it is.

I agree with you completely on principle, despite personally liking the spoilers.

And honestly, I'm of the opinion that whatever 'internet cred' someone gets for leaking them is worthwhile because they should at a very minimum be fired for leaking them, and it should kill their future job prospects in the industry.

But I do realize that is somewhat hypocritical on my part because as I said I do like spoilers.

Which makes me think this guy is even more full of it -- they interrogated two of them, and now he's talking about it? Pretty easy for LucasFilm to narrow their search, then, isn't it? It's apparently one of two people.

Something smells.

Just to he fair, nobody is really discussing "spoilers". Even spoiler man himself said he does not want to ruin any big events.

All it is is speculation on very basic character details. It's stuff every trailer and magazine will be talking about in 4-5 months anyways.

Besides I am thinking this dude is full of it after his last two talks.

Default Some other interesting stuff.

The film’s production has rumored to face many bumps along the way as Abrams and Disney have clashed several times throughout the film.

“Disney has apparently interfered in several matters regarding the film,” according to the Reddit post. “That, coupled with ‘oversights’, is causing Abrams great stress; Spoiler Man describes him as looking ‘10 years older every time we see him’ and having no love lost for Disney at this point.”

Disney is also allegedly leaking fake information to throw publications off, so some of the true rumors are mixed with planted false ones to cast doubt.

However, the Disney production has yet to respond to any rumors regarding the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” production.

See, I call them spoilers because (if true) they reveal something about the film you would not otherwise know without seeing it.

Certainly not Siskel's famous "The chick is a DUDE!" spoiler, but a spoiler nonetheless.

And he may be full of it, but damn its got me excited for when it comes out!!

Which may be that LucasFilm is not really upset with the leaks and that they're being carefully controlled by them, including the "they're stepping up security" line. There are a hundred people on a movie set and there are probably a thousand once the film goes into post-production, especially at the special effects houses. Just look at the credits of any effects-driven movie lately and not everyone involved gets a credit. So in the end, it's actually quite impossible to control leaks.

Personally, I agree with "Walt's Ghost" about this: if everything about the film is known before release, it's really going to spoil the film for everyone. But on the other hand, I think it's actually in the studio's interest to maintain fan interest in the film by leaking out little bits of info here and there. And letting the fans know which characters are in the film doesn't really spoil anything, IMO. Major plot details are another matter.

The big problem is that people are going to be talking (and bad-mouthing) this film for the next year and by the time it's released, everyone's going to decide that they already hate it. As I've posted before, all this internet ridiculousness is really starting to hurt various industries. Just as we can't get decent politicians to run for office anymore because they don't want the hassle of having every single detail of their lives explored and because the press is far more interested in the "gotcha" moment than investigating complex policy positions, the best directors will give up because they won't want to go through what Lucas has gone through. Just as many actors are finding more fulfillment in cable-TV, I think the best directors will eventually head there as well.

There's some lines that even I won't cross when ti comes to hiding spoiler information and when not to hide it. If the spoiler information I'm posting contains major reveals, I'll hide that info in spoiler tags. However, if it's information that isn't considered to be spoiler information, such as innocuous link that doesn't reveal anything in the 'url address' itself, then I won't 'hide' it with spoiler tags. If it's posting cast information and what roles they're playing, I won't post it as spoilers. If I'm posting technical information about aliens or creatures that appear in the film, I won't post it as spoilers. However, if it contains major plot speculation such as revealing information about specific plot details, then I'll post it as 'spoiler' information.

You just have to set your own standards on what is considered to be spoiler information. I think it's stupid to consider everything involved with the new Star Wars movie to be 'spoiler information' because taking that stance is just insane.

I will go even further and say that the modern human/consumer is destroying all sorts of industries. Movies, video games, and music have all been ripped apart by people's self entitled narcissistic-know it all egos.

You just can't please the masses anymore. The fact is, this teaser could have been the most mind blowing thing of all time and people would still have reacted the same and we would still have non Star Wars fans on here saying it still does nothing for them.

I call bull on that one (not meant to be aimed at you personally). This type of attitude has ALWAYS been prevalent. people *****ed about movies for DECADES. all that's changed is that we get instant knowledge of the rest of the world's pleasure or displeasure due to the internet. It's the same thing with crime. people are all thinking that we're in the middle of some crime crisis, but in reality we're lower than we've been in many decades (the 70's to be precises), but the media and the internet is there to make us all feel like it's happening so much more than it used to.

Games and Movies are doing just fine, Movies are declining from their PEAK, for the simple fact that video games and other digital pasttimes are coming up and are popular. the public only has so much time to spend and if something is new and exciting it will pull from the same pie of consumers that Movies has to pull from too, meaning less for one, but more for another

I also have to question about enforcing the spoilers rules especially when a discussion topic is so heavily going to be discussed about plotlines and story ideas. If you're talking about a movie that isn't even out yet, spoilers are going to be a part of that. Now, spoilers are clear to be enforced when you're talking about a television series because that discussion is going to revolve around past episodes, current episodes and future episodes.

What I've noticed is that people use spoiler tags even when discussing movies made several years ago. I think spoiler culture is a given but there need to be clear guidelines as to what's considered a spoiler as well as when spoiler information is no longer considered to be spoiler material.

Sorry to get off the beaten track here. lols

I don't see how any of those industries have been, or are in the process of being destroyed. That seems a bit hyperbolic.

Now, are things different in a world of the WWW? Of course they are. The only people who would question that are people don't know any better because their whole lives have been spent in that world. But for all the rest of us, it's obvious.

Does that mean that any of those industries you've mentioned have been "destroyed" or are in the process of being "destroyed?" No. Obviously. I mean, heck, look at the films that came out or are coming out this year. Amazing!

You guys hate the mystery box, I get it. But I see it as Abrams trying to preserve the filmgoing experience that he had growing up, and one many of us shared as well.
More than almost anything right now I want to be watching SWVII:THA, however with that not being possible I want to do the closest thing available which is read all of the juicy spoilers that are hitting the web. I would really like the naive theater experience, but I'm willing to trade that one night of bliss (and a bunch of work avoiding rumors/trailers) to be able to get some of that Star Wars goodness from now until 12/2015.

Yep.

Me too. I see that about the same.
I get to enjoy SW for a whole year... and sure, I'll know a bunch about the movie, but then I'll still enjoy it, just not spoiler free.
