He's my favorite part of the teaser. I have a feeling he'll have a big role and will probably be very funny. I love the design. It looks like something from the Star Wars universe.

Exactly. People forget that R2 and 3P0 were/are equally potentially kitschy designs, but we have come to love them so because of the personality invested in them by the story and the actors bringing them to life both physically and vocally. BB-8 should be no exception.

Maybe for just Star Wars, J.J. Abrams should have changed his production name to...

Good Robot Productions

It just dawned on me that Poe Dameron is just Cameron Poe backwards with a D.

JJ must be a big Con Air fan.

Reminds me of something from Wall-E if I'm being honest.

ps I liked Wall-E.

If you're talking about this gif I posted, it's the robot from an 80's horror movie by Wes Craven called Deadly Friend. The robot is named BB.

Oh. Thanks. Never heard of it before. If Abrams is really aiming for that it will be interesting to see if anyone picks it up.

LOL!

I don't think Abrams is going for that at all. I'm just making a reference connecting Abrams' robot to Craven's robot, because they're both named BB.

Or, and this is a long shot, but maybe Abrams or one of his writers had this book lying around when trying to come up with character names.

Edgar Allan Poe: A Bibliography of Criticism by J. Lasley Dameron

Writers draw from anything around them. The name of the character Rinzler in Tron Legacy was conjured up from having the Making of Star Wars books by J.W. Rinzler sitting on a table in front of them.

Absolutely. 15/70 at the Loews Lincoln Square in NYC. It was the only trailer not played off of the advertising projector.

Love those old school cards. Great memories of collecting/trading those when I was a kid.

It's family friendly in our society in which we've become immune to media violence and where parents are fine with their kids watching such violence but would freak completely if Princess Leia exposed a nipple or if Anakin was bisexual.

But thousands (perhaps millions) of people died in those stories plus we had the scene where Luke's adopted parents were burned to death and were left as charred skeletons, so how family friendly was it really? We should have found that scene quite shocking. Meanwhile, humans get shot to death, crash their ships, ride cycles and smash into trees and explode and we don't really think any more about it than shooting down a target at shooting gallery in an amusement park.

Not that Disney films have no violence. Disney's animated films tended to anthropomorphize cartoon characters so we love or care for them and then have them killed or taken away, like Bambi's and Dumbo's mothers. I think many psychologists have written papers about how the death of Bambi's mother screwed up a whole generation of kids. But maybe part of Bambi's purpose, since it was released in 1942, was to prepare kids for the losses associated with war.
