Kylo Ren is the clear winner for names, IMHO. Which is good, I WANT the bad guy to have a cool name.

Poe, Finn, Rey... They all seem pretty bland.

I can hear it now...someone will ask who's going on the mission and Luke will be like "Poe, Rey, Me, Leia, Han" and then Luke breaks into a Julie Andrews song.

BB-8...my opinion on the name matches my opinion on the droid...meh. Not impressed with the name or the droid, but I'm hoping it will win me over. I'm glad they tried to bring in something new and unique, but the R2 unit head on a rolling ball looks very weird to me..doesn't have a clean or aesthetic look to me, or at least one I like.

But thousands (perhaps millions) of people died in those stories plus we had the scene where Luke's adopted parents were burned to death and were left as charred skeletons, so how family friendly was it really? We should have found that scene quite shocking. Meanwhile, humans get shot to death, crash their ships, ride cycles and smash into trees and explode and we don't really think any more about it than shooting down a target at shooting gallery in an amusement park.

Not that Disney films have no violence. Disney's animated films tended to anthropomorphize cartoon characters so we love or care for them and then have them killed or taken away, like Bambi's and Dumbo's mothers. I think many psychologists have written papers about how the death of Bambi's mother screwed up a whole generation of kids. But maybe part of Bambi's purpose, since it was released in 1942, was to prepare kids for the losses associated with war.
Don't forget Mufasa. The first time a Disney film ever showed a dead body on the screen. Of course if we're talking strictly pre-1970s Disney then yeah. Snow White had more than a few intense scenes in it. Pinocchio had the Lampwick turning into a donkey scene that created a bit of a stir. Fantasia, well, is Fantasia. There are at least two segments in that one that are quite intense. Night on Bald Mountain being the most remembered. I get what you're saying about the family friendly thing. It really was more than a Disney movie had ever or will ever deal with. And I love Disney. And that's an interesting thought on Bambi. Disney treated the moment with gravity, but he didn't go totally overboard with it.

Can you guess the last names of Finn and Rey? You should know why they're not being revealed.

So, box office...

Just talking re: US, even if the film is terrible it makes $300 million, right? If it's legitimately good to great it challenges Avatar's $760 million surely.

Agree? Disagree?

I love the new look of the stormtroopers. They look like the originals but modernized. I never really cared for the clonetroopers. And I really hope they're not just fodder in the new films and that their armor actually protects them this time around.

The opening weekend alone - middle of December notwithstanding - should be huge so yeah, $300M sounds like a reasonable floor.

Who knows what the top end could be.

I think this will take the "biggest non-Cameron" crown, for sure (and Potter gets shoved further down the list ), and maybe even the "biggest non-Avatar" crown. I doubt it comes close to $2B, though, let alone Avatar, let alone Gone With The Wind adjusted.

As for "Poe Dameron" it doesn't really matter about the origin of the name. There are two immediate problems with it that I see:

1. Now that I have it associated with "Cameron Poe," I will constantly be thinking of a much better movie (in all likelihood) while he's on screen.

2. It's sounds obscenely stupid. It's one of those character names so bad that it's distracting, because you're thinking about how inept the character designers/screenwriters/whatever are, rather than the character himself.

I think they took the name "Finnick" from The Hunger Games and shortened it.

I hope it's revealed that Finn is the love child of Leia and Lando who ends up joining the Empire.

I know who she is, but I can't see her taking the Skywalker name because it'd undermine her adoptive Alderaanian heritage, her being a princess and all. They certainly didn't do that in the EU. And yes, I know that the EU has ended up in the nearest trash compactor but I think the name will stick.

Rey Organa Solo it is.

Hmmmmmm, keep the name of the couple who took you in and raised you or take name of the guy who force choked your mom and blew up your planet.

Wrestling with that choice must have caused Leia a lot of sleepless nights

Despite them ditching the EU, I'm personally still fond of thinking that Han and Leia had their three kids, so I'm kinda hopeful that Rey could be an alias for Jaina Solo (especially since Rey appears to be some kind of inventor). But, I guess we won't find out the whole, true story until next December...
