I think Brad Bird would be a great choice to direct considering his very impressive resume in both animation and live-action (with MI4). He'd be a very interesting, albeit safe "studio" choice.

They could take a risk and give it to somebody like Neil Blomkamp or Duncan Jones but we know they won't do that.

Abrams already has two Star Trek films under his belt. It'd be a bit redundant of him to move on to Star Wars if you ask me. Favreua could do it well I think. He did spectacle well with the first Iron Man and did sci-fi technically well with Zathura but again, a safe choice if you ask me.

Out of the safe, obvious candidates being listed everywhere I'd go with Bird.

Personally though, I'd like to see a newer and fresher filmmaker with an original voice like Jones or Blomkamp take on the Star Wars myth.

George Lucas contribution to tens of millions of children's childhood and to the film Industry in general makes him an absolute Legend, imo.

I don't think his influence can be overstated,he made so much happen and helped movies to another level.

I don't care about him not releasing the UOT or tinkering with people's childhood. SW movies were his baby's and are his to deal with as he pleases. TBH I find the haters and whiners pathetic.

George,we love you and thank you for everything! YOU ROCK!!

Just because I love Goblet of Fire, I'm going to throw Mike Newell's name out there.

Good for you,I'm not a fanboy. I see his contributions and shortcomings realistically and know that him releasing or not releasing something is nothing to get worked up about.

The Star Wars universe needs more planets blowing up... so Michael Bay!!

Actually, for a darker installment, how about Chris Nolan?

Make an episode about Dagobah with Tim Burton directing and Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter playing Yoda's family - like Chewie's in The Holiday Special.
Make a Spaghetti Western episode set on Tatooine with Quentin Tarantino directing.

All the people saying Joss Whedon, he wrote Alien Resurrection and maintains to this day it was an awesome script, blaming every other aspect of the movie for being wrong.

Now of course the recent re-scheduling of the 3D re-releases makes complete sense....
I guess by the time Return of the Jedi 3D has left cinemas it'll be almost time for Episode 7 3D..... very clever.

Can't wait!

Some of the names on here really are speculative - there's no way certain directors would even be considered for it, let alone get the gig. As much as I'd like someone like Spielberg or Johnston to realistically do it, I honestly have the feeling that it'll probably be some unknown person who takes the helm of at least the first one. Giving directing jobs to people quite young in the industry would really help with the next generation of film-makers, and, if anyone will take that chance, it'll be Disney. They know that the Star Wars brand will sell regardless of who directs it and, with a strict production team behind it, why wouldn't they just test someone out? Means the director can't turn around and say "I'm Gore Verbinski - you have to pay me THIS much to direct it!", so they save money.

And I'd be VERY shocked if Joseph Kosinski even got a look-in; he has directed one Disney film, and that really wasn't well accepted by the TRON fans. I thought it was very entertaining, but a lot of people hated it.

I doubt they'll re-release them this close to the boxset because they know no one will buy them. Give it a year or so and then they'll do it, with some special bonus features or something that only appears on that version.

I think it should be an unknown, or some one who is relatively new and younger than those dinosaurs that keep getting mentioned.

My pick if I had any say would be the guy who did the Pirates movies, or
Richard Donner, but I think even he is a dinosaur at this point.

Kevin Smith, yes if you look at his movie style he is an obvious hell no, BUT he is a huge fan who would really take fan considerations to heart.

or my last pick would be whoever made Race to Witch Mountain.

On second thought, just get Seth Green.

Steven Spielburg (first choice-best choice)
Joss Whedon
JJ Abrams
Joseph Kosinski
Gore Verbinski

No point saying James Cameron because he's tied up with Avatar 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.

It's SPIELBERG. Is there a rule or sth. online that you have to misspell his name, because it seems like 99% of the people do it?
Well, thanks for correcting me, although I'm not sure the caps/bold text was necessary.

From CBR... a lil blurb from Mark Hammil:
Quote:
It's been two days following the announcement of Disney's purchase of Lucasfilm and a new "Star Wars" chapter, and the online community is still reeling. EW got a hold of Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, who revealed that Lucas had told him about the intention to make episodes VII, VIII and IX about a year ago -- but Hamill had no idea about the sale to Disney.

"I had no idea that George was going to sell to Disney until I read it online like everybody else. He did tell us last summer about wanting to go on and do [Episodes] VII, VIII, and IX, and that [newly appointed Lucasfilm president] Kathleen Kennedy would be doing them. He seems to be in a really good place. He’s really happy. And that’s nice because I know that when we were making the movies, he was not a jolly guy on set. [Laughs] I always felt badly for him because he agonizes over details, and I’m sure after imagining it in his head for so many years, to see it realized -- he’d look up and just hang his head and groan. Harrison [Ford], Carrie [Fisher], and I were always trying to cheer him up and joke him out of his doom and gloom. I missed his call yesterday, but I spoke to him maybe three weeks ago. But until we know more, it’s hard to make any comment other than congratulations to George."

Hamill couldn't say whether plans for the next trilogy would include him returning to the franchise, but he did note that Lucas would not direct.

Not "for some reason". The Civil Rights Act is only 50 years old. Segregation is still a raw nerve in this country for people who lived under it. People routinely confuse the sharecropper status of the black characters in Song of the South as slaves living on a plantation. It is telling that Disney released Song of the South on home video in every region BUT Region 1, for the reasons I just explained. Maybe we'll see it released stateside in time for it's 100th anniversary...in 2046.
