I remember being chided by certain members for saying that JJ had junked Lucas' outlines and the Arndt script, well it looks like the foot's on the other hand now! [/airplane]

I forgot word of mouth and the internet didn't exist when those 4 films came out.

If you're so married to fictional entertainment that it "hurts" you then you are butthurt, plain and simple.

Fine by me. I am nervous about seeing such beloved characters onscreen looking much older. That hasn't worked out too well recently with some franchises(Crystal Skull), although it has with others(Rocky Balboa). But one thing I'm certain about is that Abrams and Disney made the right call to ditch whatever lameass ideas Lucas had for the new trilogy after the incoherent mess that was the prequels.

Exactly. I've never quite fully understood the fanatical viewpoint or mentality; that one builds up in thought, that they then react negatively when their anticipations aren't met. {shrugs}

I think Lucas should reveal what his ideas were for the trilogy seeing as how it's really not considered spoiler territory..

It would be interesting to see the differences between his ideas and Disney's.

What if for the first time Lucas's ideas were better this time around than what we are getting???

Bah, Lucas and Arndt need to chill. Having their scripts/stories retooled by other parties should work in the film's favor, because when it comes to any written word other perspectives and critiques help make stories better. That was one of the issues with the PT; I think Lucas worked from a first draft and didn't let anybody touch his baby. Without criticism, however, nobody could point out the issues with the writing, and it stuck out on the big screen in the end.

I have faith that the story will be good, regardless of whether the focus in on old or new characters.

Looks more like a canyon run to me. Might be kinda like the Kronos scenes in ST:ID. Looks awesome to me.

How do you get from point A to point Z like that? Because Abrams wants to give the original cast one last go, it automatically makes VIII and IX bad? This film has a bunch of incredible actors, outside of the original cast...There is absolutely nothing to worry about it, and I have no idea how one can decide that it will suck without if they aren't in it...Also, the thought is they'll still be around, but in smaller roles. Which is fine. As long as it works in the story, that's what matters.

Smaller scale comparison. The new Dallas TV show had to use the older cast members to get people interested in the show. The problem was that the new cast did not have the same "chrisma" the same mojo so to speak. I believe this was one of the major sticking points in the PT as well. They just didnt have characters that you really could care about on an emotional level. Face it, the big draw so far is not that "another SW" film is coming out but that Han,Luke and Leia are in it! Thats why i said that I hope its a good young cast or else you will have another PT on your hands....keeping fingers crossed.

I think the lack of character is due to the writing more so than the actual characters or actors who played them.

I think this movie would be big even if it didn't have the original cast in it. I mean, how many people are kinda worried about seeing a 70-something year old Harrison Ford as Han Solo??

Disney sure is keeping the lid on Strange Magic. No reviews anywhere. Not a good sign.

EDIT

A-ha...just found one.

This is a dumb statement. Star Wars, despite being popcorn movies, should still be considered art. People get attached to art for all kinds of emotional reasons and are allowed to feel "hurt" or dissatisfied just as much as you are allowed for feel joy for something.

Calling someone butthurt for not liking the PT is the same calling out people who enjoyed them as not having any standards.

Not liking a piece of art is one thing. Rattling on and on for years afterwards with a venomous fervor is another.

I couldnt disagree more...I think its both and they go hand in hand. I think seeing the original cast will be a large part of the appeal.

Yeah, because making statements like this will in no way exacerbate the issue and lead to more of the same back and forth arguing.

The irony in this post spoken by a pt fanatic who gets so butthurt (I'm using this word sarcastically) when someone disagrees is HYSTERICAL

Disney's using their Touchstone label to release Strange Magic, at least stateside. I've already seen one critic state the film is the worst animated film to ever come from Disney, not understanding Disney's just a distributor on the film. The film was made in Singapore by a LucasFilm studio, with an assist from ILM. So releasing it under Touchstone makes sense, to keep the confusion at a minimum.
