In essence, films never get finished, they get abandoned. At some point, you're dragged off the picture kicking and screaming while somebody says, "Okay, it's done." That isn't really the way it should work. Occasionally, [you can] go back and get your cut of the video out there, which I did on both American Graffiti and THX 1138; that's the place where it will live forever. So what ends up being important in my mind is what the DVD version is going to look like, because that's what everybody is going to remember. The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won't last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you'll be able to project it on a 20-foot-by-40-foot screen with perfect quality. I think it's the director's prerogative, not the studio's, to go back and reinvent a movie.

I remember this discussion from George Lucas. I don't agree with any of it, though. Artists are supposed to try and come up with the best version as possible when making something. Sure, sometimes set-backs happen. But that doesn't mean finished films are ABANDONED films.

Another way of looking at this discussion... it's like George is saying that ALL films released are in a rough cut status. When people go to see the latest film it is always an unfinished, abandoned effort. Other people's movies are simply DRAFTS. Lucas's revisions to Star Wars makes them "real" movies and everyone else simply turns in a half-baked concoction. Movies are supposed to be constantly tweaked? They are supposed to be tweaked PRIOR TO ACTUAL release. Then it's done. Move on. Time for something else to be made. (I'll give exception to planned efforts on things like Jackson's Middle Earth films and other extended editions made because of budgetary reasons prior to theatrical releases). By no means are films meant to be tweaked and worked on indefinitely for forever... that's just not the way it's supposed to work.

I'm glad Disney might be able to finally put out the original unaltered trilogy.

And I'm wondering if the link I previously posted is some indication that it might finally happen now, of course I'm still not getting my hopes up.

My gut sense is telling me that they will announce the UOT at Celebration.

Doesn't Fox still own the distribution rights to the original films?

That quote is pretty old-- I think George, as he tends to do, kind of changed him mind about that. In the time since he said that, he did the DVD re-release with the UOT as "bonus material," he started calling the films the "Classic" versions and not referring to them as outdated rough drafts, and then of course sold Star Wars to Disney with the likely outcome of the UOT being restored and released.

Theoretically, but if Disney wants to do a box set, its not like Fox is going to turn down more Star Wars money. If Disney wants to do it, Fox will go along.

No...just read it and pounded my head into the desk...going to need aspirin and a nap.

By the way, before I black out from the concussion, Disney bought out Paramount for all rights to the Indiana Jones films. Even IF you don't believe Lucas got all rights back in the 90's in exchange for Prequel distribution and TV rights...you're insane or stubborn beyond all belief to think Disney wouldn't also secure the rights to Star Wars episode IV and Fox wouldn't horse trade for something they wanted. Just accept it and move on.

Is the official title of the new movie- "Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens" or just "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"?

It's follows a little like the original trilogy. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

But in the opening crawl, it will show Episode VII.

Fox has a distribution agreement with LucasFilm that expires at the end of 2019. If LucasFilm wants to release any of the six films during that time, Fox gets the privilege of distribution. They can't say no to LucasFilm, they distribute and get a cut for their efforts.

Ernest, how's the head?
I was hoping you post some more "jumping out the window" gifs!
I'm still laughing at the last batch.

Look at the bright side: going forward(for VII onward) there should be no more distribution talk. Thusly saving the wear & tear on both your desk and head!

Well yeah, they're the only good ones......so far.

So I'm curious. Do you guys think this is going to be as vapid and soulless as the Abrams Star Trek films?
