I'm nearly certain that estimation is for the first three days. It will be the highest grossing film of the year worldwide though. I'm firmly in The Force Awakens camp.

It may go over a billion? Pffft. As the THR analyst said, the movie will do $1 billion without blinking. If it's got the legs - the big winter hits generally do, especially as we head into the cinematic wilderness of Jan/Feb - and appeals to both old and young fans alike (just as I said earlier) then it will smash Avengers.

Not only is this factually inaccurate (there are a lot of real models in the PT), the PT CGI holds unfairly well, ESPECIALLY when compared to the majority of other CGI world in 1999-2005

Re: box office. There is no competition for it for about a month. It'll be #1 until at least Kung Fu Panda 3 at the very end of Jan.

Believe it or not the effects for Episode I was approached the same way as Episode VII does. They go with practical first, when it's not possible or too costly only then they used CGI. But starting with Episode II and especially with Episode III, I would say the CGI is a bit more while still have tons of practical & models. To highlight scenes that were famously mistakenly for CGI are Utapau and Mustafar, they're models with some green screen with the characters. Ron Fricke also shot plates from the volcanic eruption in Mt Etna for Mustafar and the mountains in Thailand for Kashyyyk. The fact that people can't differentiate only means they did a great job overall.

The numbers will be adjusted when the movie leaks a week before release.

If you decide to hold strong on your opinion about how much TFA will make in total, I want to bet you on that legit. This movie, even if it doesn't live up to expectations, will make disgustingly huge amounts of money. It will be insane!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The narration in the latest trailer has been a topic of debate — the lines spoken by Luke Skywalker are taken from a speech he gives to Leia in Return of the Jedi, but it was difficult to tell if the dialogue was lifted directly, or a new narration from The Force Awakens.

Speaking at Celebration over the weekend, Mark Hamill and JJ Abrams confirmed that the narration was actually a bit of both — Hamill recorded the lines again the week before the trailer was released, and the new recording was added to the original as reverb. This means it was likely that the dialogue was just for the purpose of the trailer, rather than having any specific part in the new movie. [ Business Insider]

Thank god they came out and said it. This also confirms the dialog is just for the trailer and will not be in the film.

Total gross is the current argument?

well, it's a Christmas release. With everyone's money being spent on gifts and traveling.

Unless your rich. Rich, powerful. Listen, if we were to rescue Star Wars, the reward would be...Well, more wealth than you can imagine!

I don't know about you but I can imagine quite a bit.

Indeed. If the early winter hits have legs then they can run and run. Avatar opened on Dec 18 2009 and didn't officially close until August 12 2010!

In some ways it makes the bigger $1B+ summer hauls all the more impressive because they have so much more competition (that said, Skyfall had a Hobbit to deal with, and vice versa) but that still won't dull Star Wars' achievement if it manages to topple Avatar.

Default What movie beat 'Avatar' in the box office?

For weekend of February 5-7, 2010, the movie Dear John passed Avatar and took number one in the box office. Dear John grossed $32.4 million, passing Avatar at $23.6 million. Avatar had been number one for seven straight weekends.
