Davy Jones and Gollum are imo two examples of CGI characters realized very well. Some details in the +10 year old films in which they first appeared might look a bit off by today's standards, but as a whole the performances still hold up.
Besides the obvious workload that went into making the characters appear life-like, realistic and 3-dimensional, I think the final impression is also helped tremendously by having respectively Bill Nighy and Andy Serkis doing all the scenes for real, interacting with the other actors exactly like their CGI alter egos were scripted/visualized to do as well as provide the voices.
A character like Jar Jar Binks in TPM on the other hand, looks extremely dated and fake even though they had Achmed Best stand in for him in most of his scenes. But there was no real actors performance in his work, nor was the character well realized in concept as well as the final result.
But this I cannon now so you can bet your life they'll shoehorn this stuff in to the

It's just Han having an ex-wife prior to the original film. It didn't even impact Empire Strikes Back, let alone the new film.

I have the issue but haven't read it yet. Guess I should do that later. Issue 6 comes out today but mine won't arrive until Monday/Tuesday so I will have to wait to see how they explain it.
It would be a real slap in the face if in The Force Awakens we find out that Han and Leia didn't end up together and the kids don't belong to them both. Would kind of cheapen the whole "I love you", "I know" bit from Empire and then Jedi. I guess that is why we have to wait until December but if the new Star Trek films proved anything is that Abrams doesn't really care about characters acting like themselves.
Han was never portrayed as the 'husband-archetype' kind of character in the OT anyway, so i'm pretty open to what they'll show us happened between him and Leia post-Jedi in The Force Awakens. I never really imagined the two of them settling down, getting kids and growing old while the years past by anyway.
What I can do without though, is some spoilery convoluted family plot suggesting that the villain is Han and Leia's daughter's remote cousin's aunt's former room mate's son.... Keep that shit in Spaceballs where it belongs, please.

[Show spoiler]Luke's appearance is like just 60 seconds, Max Von Sydow also lacking screen time. And it's like episodes IV, V and VI compacted into one movie. It's the greatest hist of the original trilogy, remixed.
Thank you, it's a very interesting read. I'll bet that parts of it will change in the final product, but a lot of it seems to match up with what's in the trailers so far.
My thoughts on the whole thing are...
It sounds like it'll be highly entertaining. Very much a one-thing-after-another plotline that always made the original films so awesome. Sounds like there's tons of epic action involved, but it still has room to let characters breathe.
However, a lot of it sounds like a major remix of Ep IV, with superweapons involved, characters going in and out of enemy territory, desert scavengers, and the big final battle at the end. Unlike TPM, which followed the Ep IV formula as well, this sounds like it'll be different enough in characters and style to hold up.
I like how everything in the movie sounds like something new. There's no retreading to places like Tattooine or Coruscant or anything (there is Yavin IV, but I kinda expected that to begin with). I like the sounds of all the new planets, new characters, new factions, new technology, and everything else. Even with all their cool designs and worldbuilding, the prequels never felt that fresh to me, it was all still confined to specific worlds and specific groups of characters; TFA sounds like it'll go wherever it damn well wants to.
So, it doesn't sound like a New Republic was ever established. Does that mean the Empire still has some control, or does this Resistance rule the galaxy, or is it all half-and-half? I hope the opening crawl will make it clear.
It seems like a lot of people really harped on how much the original cast will be used, but the write-up makes it look like the new characters will take the spotlight most of the time. I think it'll be better that way.
Not sure if I'm feeling much about
[Show spoiler]having Rey and Rylo being secret Solo twins or whatever. It might turn out great if the twists are well-executed, but that remains to be seen. On its own, it sounds like they're trying hard to re-create the big reveals that made the original films so endearing

No mention is made of the Force much, so I find it a little hard to understand the big deal about

I'm assuming that the script will have nuances of some kind that make it all clear.

Oh man, don't read The Courtship of Princess Leia. It boils down to Leia almost marrying another dude and Han getting her back by being a crazy stalker-kidnapper.
In contrast, I don't think Han having had previous affairs prior to Episode IV is likely to affect the chapters in Episode VII. Hell, it clearly didn't affect them in Episode V!
