I do think the score by John Williams is exciting. I wonder if he will score the others from Rian Johnson and Colin Trevvorow or if this is his last Star Wars score.
The man is in his 80's now. I wouldn't blame him for retiring after this one.

I do wonder if he has read the outlines for VIII and IX and come up with themes/motifs that he can hand off to other composers, should he decide that VII will be his last.

Well, Williams still plans to do other Spielberg films in the coming years. He is taking a break (sort of) in that he isn't scoring Spielberg's film this year but is spending all of that time working on Star Wars.

I would think he would still want to continue on as composer if he can. Of course, doing both the Spielberg films and more Star Wars might be too much. He was semi-retired but still does Spielberg's films and did The Book Thief. Eventually he won't be able to score every Star Wars film though based on Disney's plans for one a year...

I think it's possible Michael Giacchino could score the 9th entry with director Trevvorow as they worked together on Jurassic World.

Unless health issues or something gets in the way I think Williams will want to stay on for Episodes VIII and IX after this one, but the spin-offs will obviously be handled by other composers as evident by Alexandre Desplat scoring Rogue One.

I agree..too bad Ben Burt and George Lucas didn't agree when they hack/slashed/and dialed down the score in the final sound mix for all three of the prequels!

Truth. That's why I'm glad JJ has already stood up to Burtt when mixing the Star Trek films, we could actually hear the music and everything, so I've got high hopes for how kickass the sound mix for Ep VII will be.

Too bad Lucas had to do the last minute let's add a scene straight out of the 1985 Droids animated cartoon, because this music sounds way better for the conveyor belt scene (a few seconds did actually survive in the final film) instead of recycling the music from the earlier chase with Zam and fricken' Yoda music shows up for no reason!

Music releases now come out on Friday in the States. So hopefully that means we'll get the soundtrack a few days earlier.

I knew about the disagreements with Ben Burtt but I thought the sound mix for The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones turned out fine. The scoreless seismic charges scene was a good call by Burtt. Then I felt it was a bit tame with Revenge of the Sith but then Gary Rydstrom was not involved.

I actually just found the Target-exclusive CD with that track pretty recently (and really cheap), glad to have it. It's pretty nice.

Yeah, I'm not talking about that. The score came in for that moment they way it was supposed to (after the charges). I'm talking about last minute editing that got the music turned into a mess (the conveyor belt sequence, the whole battle of genosis which used recycled Phantom Menace music in a hodge podge Hong Kong kung-fu film sort of way). We've got music taken from when Yoda is fighting Dooku and it's dumped into scenes where Anakin is fighting the droids on the conveyor belt...WTF!!! If you're going to loop in music from other parts of the movie, or other SW movies, at least don't use the character specific ones. Of course the same thing happens in Phantom Menace when Jar Jar says "I give up" during the droid battle, and it's Anakin's theme playing because it was music that was to play when Anakin was racing Sebulba earlier in the film!

BTW: the big Jedi vs. droid army sequence in AOTC would've been a lot cooler had the Jedi not been Lucasfilm neckbeards given 15 seconds of fame to be extras. It looked like half the Jedi had stumbled into the battle looking for a vending machine stocked with diet soda and Dolly Madison chocolate donuts.

May or June depending on how long the Box Office keeps this film in the Top 10.

If they aren't afraid of losing too much money to pirating, I wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't get released until closer to the release of Rogue One, so maybe Late Oct.-Early Nov. 2016.
