Growing up in Cloud City has given him plenty of time to find that light saber in the bowels of Cloud City (or acquire it from the Ugnaut who did find it). As the Empire fell and the economy tanked, Cloud City went out of business, and Finn had to become a scavenger to survive. He neither likes nor hates the First Order, and only picks a side when he meets the love of his life (Rey). He is basically this trilogy’s Han Solo.

Rey is the daughter of Leia and Han Solo. The Daughter of the Daughter of Skywalker is strong with the Force (or loaded with midichlorians, if you must), and she will become the Jedi badass of this trilogy.

Luke’s son is strong with the Force (or filled with midichlorians, blah, blah). He becomes seduced by the Dark Side, joins up with a group of Sith wannabees, the Knights of Ren, and chooses Kylo as his Knights of Ren name. He either kills his mother, or she dies early in the movie, or before the movie (you are watching Disney!). The Widower Jedi Master Luke must face his son in the climatic light saber duel, in an attempt to turn him back to the Bright Side. Kylo destroys his father, turning him into a Force Ghost for the rest of the trilogy “If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.” Yes, JJ will be unable to resist a father/son showdown and for the 63 year old Jedi to utter the exact line the previous 63 year old Jedi uttered in 1977 at the time of his transformation into a Force Ghost.
Spoilers:

[Show spoiler] In Aftermath (the new book) someone has already sold Luke's light saber to a group of "religious fanatics",
so the light saber has nothing to do with finn
[Show spoiler](until the film starts, as we've already seen rumors about it starting off the plot)

Luke's lightsaber was Anakin's lightsaber, he didn't make his own until he got to Tatooine to rescue Han. The one he lost on Bespin was his father's. Vader's would have a red blade and synthetic crystal, Finn's looks blue in the trailers'.

It's the 'saber which Obi-Wan picked up in Sith, put it that way.

I really hope there is no goddamn story revolving around a lightsaber. It's the equivalent to a Han Solo movie revolving around how he got his pistol and why it has a hair trigger (why it was so easy to shoot Greedo first).

I have a feeling someone is going to be disappointed...considering that they only thing we know with 100% certainty about the plot is that SOMEONE IS LOOKING FOR LUKE'S LOST LIGHTSABER!!!

Why they're looking for it: Seen good theories...

Who's looking for it: Okay, we might know 2 things for with 100% certainty, but I don't know how to use the spoiler tags so I won't name them...

What Luke is doing: From the photos he looks like he is doing his best to be a hermit in some form or capacity, could be a red herring. Heck, the movie might start with him fighting Kylo Ren for all we know, that would throw everyone off...now I kinda hope they do that...

Hm... I'm not sure how to answer this without diving into all the leaks. Spoilers. You've been warned.

[Show spoiler] seriously. Click at your own risk.
[Show spoiler]its not a red herring, and he's not landos kid who grew up in cloud city. We already know a significant amount of the plot from leaks, toys, and more. He's absolutely force sensitive, and has the potential to be a Jedi. At the end, he gets his ass kicked by Kylo in a dual, and stays with Maz and Chewbacca, while Rey goes to train with Luke. He'll be a Jedi by the end of the trilogy, but not necessarily in 7 and 8. Maybe not even till the end of 9. Luke isn't even in this film until the last few minutes aside from a flashback and possible hologram appearance.

There's also more evidence to Kylo killing his father in 7. IE Han.

"The only black man in the new trilogy HAS to be related to the only black man in the original trilogy..that is my theory"
Really? Reeeeeeeaaally?

Anyway.
Gamma has it pretty much right, but there will be some curve balls in there too. People think that they have the genealogy locked and they will be surprised.

And for the record, there is some serious effort out there to find Vader's saber.

Not really. It doesn't take much imagination to believe that Anakin's saber, Vader's first weapon, and the device used as the primary weapon to wipe out the Jedi Order, is of serious historical value and may be mystified by some groups. Solo's an awesome character, but putting him on Anakin's level in the SW universe is sort of like taking a badass biker from California and saying his bandana is of similar value to Hitler's hat. Anakin's saber could easily have "holy grail" status.

it's just a hand weapon, not the Death Star or Nuclear bomb. I guess they are going the Asian route then with many martial arts films revolved around the story of a powerful sword.

And making a story around "collecting" is actually funny since it would be taking jabs at Star Wars fans with their obsession with consuming Star Wars memorabilia. Kylo Ren as well as Captain Phasma are a Star Wars fan wet dream - appealing to their collecting and/or Cosplay hobbies.

And it'll all come full circle in the next round of Comic-Cons, when all the fans will dress up as Kylo and Phasma. It's irony on an epic scale.

Even if it was just a hand weapon, which it isn't (see "The Gathering" from S5 of Clone Wars, or just relate it back to it's Samurai roots, where the sword holds enormous importance to the warrior), it's still a historical object of immense value. It's "just a hand weapon" in the same way that the holy grail is "just a cup".

In the book it states
[Show spoiler]when ignited it has a crimson glow so not Anakin's/Luke's lightsaber but Vader's.

No doubt the saber featured in the trailer is the one Luke lost at Cloud City which was originally Anakin's but this isn't the saber mentioned in the Aftermath book as someone posted above, that is mean't to be Vader's red lightsaber.

It and some of the others are from the Topps Star Wars: Card Trader app. It's part of a virtual trading card set.
