Factor in the inherent instability of the film projection process and you'll also lose some resolution thataway too, so while the Laser version may 'only' be 4K it'll have come directly off of the DI (itself a scan of the negative) and will be rock solid in terms of projection (the 2.40 scenes will look better too for not having been blown up into 15/70 and then duped). I'll bet cash money that it will run the 15/70 version extremely close in terms of real-world viewing, and I'm not just saying that because I'm sore I won't be seeing the 2D 15/70 version.
Why would the go for 4th generation prints when they only need a tiny handful of prints? Only reason those were used was the industrial quantity of prints needed in. I imagine they'll write out the DI and strike the prints from that element.

The movie has already generated $6.5 million in advanced ticket sales, and that is just for IMAX alone, and it has not been 24hours yet.

The quantities for proper 15/70 rollouts weren't ever huge (wasn't Interstellar 200 something? I might be pulling that from thin air though) and yet they still only struck a handful of showprints with the rest going through the usual duping process to keep the wear on the 15/70 negative to a minimum. I guess the point there is more that Nolan wanted to keep everything as photochemical as possible.

In the case of Ep VII, as long as the IMAX sequence was worked on & finished at a minimum of 8K then yeah, they could film out a 15/70 interneg from that, cut it into the uprezzed 35mm filmouts and strike whatever prints they need from that. Still not gonna get 32K from it though.

Huh?

I can make out laser, money, and IMAX...

Is it still enjoyable to watch a movie if you're so picky about how it's screened? Just wondering...not trying to troll...

I get that a lot. Pity you didn't also quote the dude who I was replying to who posted an even longer roll up of tech talk, but whatever.

[edit] To actually answer your question I did post this after I'd seen the trailer, and it's not concerned with dupes or 15/70 or not trying to troll in the slightest: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...7#post11412787. But, as you can probably tell, I'm also fascinated with the nuts and bolts of both moviemaking and movie presentation. I don't understand why so many people can't possibly imagine that the two - a love of movies and a love of tech stuff - can't go hand in hand, like both can't be processed at the same time, but then I'm one of those smart guys who can watch a subtitled movie without complaining that he's 'reading' it rather than watching it.

Not that hitting 32K was ever even part of the equation. The 18K figure was always crap, and ever since Arri's tests of 35mm and 5/70 under perfect conditions, we know IMAX taps out at 11Kish.

Yep. Even the IMAX VFX for Dark Knight Rises was filmed out at 'only' 5.6K compared to the quoted figure of 18K for original camera negative, and yet it all still cut together rather nicely. You'd still need to oversample to avoid aliasing and so on, so I'd say a 12K neg scan for an 8K digital finish would extract most of what's on the average 15/70-shot show.

Only a bigot would sign that garbage. The only thing we should be concerned about is whether or not the movie is good, not that one of the main characters dares to have a skin color other than white.

We should have faith that the director has selected the best actors available to present his vision on screen and not be concerned with what 'color' they happen to be.

The people who organized these boycott posts really should be ashamed of themselves, but I do realize that idiots and bigots feel no shame.

With Cap 3 not long after.

Spectre should also do a sizeable chunk of business and maybe even Mockingjay Part 2 will do it because it's the finale and it'll have the added 3D premium as well. Five potential billion dollar babies? That's a lot of money.

How many times have you all watched the final trailer?

I must have hit a dozen times by now. There are a few movies that I've anxiously anticipated before, like The Avengers and Jurassic World. The Force Awakens has to be the most hyped I've ever been for a movie. I've never looked forward to a movie as much as I'm looking forward to this.

The payoff will be amazing.
