That's what happens when you get decent writers onboard. I mean, Jonathan Hales for Episode 2? And will Lucas ever admit the open-secret that British playwrite Tom Stoppard heavily polished the dailogue for Episode 3? I doubt it.

This also happens when Lucas stays at home.

This Legends and Current canon is all too confusing since when I was still a major fan of Star Wars back in 2006. Funny enough I've been grabbing quite a lot of Star Wars video games from online to play cause of VII-IX and Rogue One, when the Legends part was still in full swing.
Just need to tell myself it's an alternate universe where thankfully the Yuuzhan Vong or whoever they're spelled isn't around, not the Legacy stuff. But I'll sorely miss Dawn of the Jedi, Tales of the Jedi, Star Wars Infinities, THE Star Wars (Which is great since it uses Lucas' really early scripts for a comic book adaptation), Knights of the Old Republic (Still need to grab the fan updates for II which makes it a more complete game), and a few others.
Come to think of it, I still may give The Clone Wars (CGI) and Rebels a watch if I really want to and I know of a friend of mine I could borrow her Star Wars comics.

But anyway, I've been reading a bit of Wookiepedia to get up to speed with the relaunched canon regarding Episodes VII-IX and Rogue One. Just a bit too confusing and too much to catch up on.

EDIT: STAR WARS: Republic Commando is dawn awesome, glad there's a 1080p patch, bummed out there isn't an Imperial Commando. But regarding the Star Wars video games belong in their own thread.

May be correct I was wrong. I went back and viewed the scene where Obi Wan is talking to Luke and he says "for a thousand generations". Well a generations is 25 years so X that by 1000 and you get 25,000 years or so.

I thought he said 1000 years.

Actually, the word "generation", in a classic sense, more accurately applies to a span of 40 years. As for the "thousand years", that was Palpatine's comment about the Republic itself, not the existence of the Jedi as a whole.

Are those silly and poorly done CGI cartoons still part of the continuity anyway?

Star Wars has always been a kid fantasy, it's just that is one which doesn't talk down to its audience, like LOTR did in its time (yes, Tolkien intended it for children).

They are and are not poorly done given the budget or much sillier than the movies themselves, hell, Clone Wars tends to be better than the prequels when it comes to writing (not that it was exactly a challenge...)

For someone who spends his spare time worrying about the continuity of Terminator and X-Men, I'm surprised you find The Clone Wars "silly and poorly done". They're fantastic, and far better than the PT. it takes a while to get into the show (usually not until the second season) but once you do, you get some incredible story lines. Hell, the stuff with Yoda in season 6 is worth it just to get the canon history of the Sith.

Well,

If that is the case, I'm saddened that the cartoons got the Jedi right and the horrid prequels just got them totally wrong.
Too bad I don't like the animation technique at all, it's so cold and uninteresting IMHO.

The animation looked much better on the Genndy Tartakovsky. Too bad hand drawn animation (or at least the hand drawn look) isn't in vogue anymore. Much better than uncanny valley bobble heads.

My biggest problem with the CGI "Clone Wars" series was two-fold: the episodes were so short, and from what I saw they were made for really young kids, with "important lesson" taglines and monotone intros. None of the films ever pulled that, so why do those cartoons? I'd have been more interested if each one was an hour long, and the tone was more in line with the films instead of being geared toward "tweens".

The episodes are short (22 mins, standard for a 30 min TV show w/commercials) but very few are one-off episodes. Almost all are 3-4 episode arcs. When I watched it I pretty much only watched an arc at a time, so it was like getting 25 mini Star Wars movies that were all an hour or an hour and 20 mins each.

Also, I can't remember a single time there was an "important lesson." That's not to say there wasn't one, but if there was they were few and far between.

I will say that the opening "movie" where they have to rescue a baby Hutt completely blows. And the entire first season is kinda terrible, as its all action and no plot, and that season is really geared towards kids. Starting in the second they get better though, and by season 3 it gets REALLY GOOD. There are still a few stinker episodes here and there, but the whole thing is worth watching.

There are plots and scenes in this series that are super dark, and clearly pointed towards us and not kids. Its definitely worth watching, especially now that its on Netflix.

For the record I'm 39, and saw ANH in the theater (in its second run) when ESB came out. So I'm not a "prequel kid"

Anybody have the trailer in 5.1/7.1? Lossless, perhaps?

This this this. Even in the first season I was taken aback by how dark some of it was for a supposed "kid's show". It's such a shame that there seems to be so many people on here who either can't get on with it or won't even try. Broken record time, but I'll say it again: S6 has some of the most fascinating Star Wars stuff I've ever seen, period.

I agree that the Clone Wars is awesome. As someone who was a massive fan from 1977 to 1999 (I guess you understand where I dropped off), the Clone Wars brought me back to fanatic again. It's simply exciting and what Star Wars is supposed to be, and way more adult than you would think.

Note that I didn't watch the Clone Wars pilot/movie as I didn't know it existed and apparently it's a good thing because it sucks.

The series gets progressively more serious as it goes along, and from the third season and on the tone is more in line with the films. I'd say it's worth sticking with but I can't force anyone, of course.
