Not exactly "popular", it's more that Zahn always spammed her everywhere to the point that every other EU love interest got somehow either killed off or put on a bus, I remember a novel where Luke and a displaced Jedi Master (her spirit was trapped in an old imperial weapon or soime other gobbedlygook and some how got herself a body by the end) fell in love but in the next novel she somehow lost her force powers (she is a frigging Jedi Master, wouldn't she have noticed right away after gettin the new body at the end of the first novel!?) so that she could get an inferiority complex and abandon Luke to go search for a way to regain her powers, later she got murdered more or less off-screen during some dark side goddess saga or whatever...

Coincidently, in the novel in question it was hinted that Mara Jade was having a relationship with lando Calrissian, which was promptly retconned a few books later with some silly excuse ("me responding to a holocall wearing lando's shirt was a decoy because REASONS!" or something like that).

I went as far back as four pages BEFORE posting. I saw screen captures (some animated, some not) but not the actual video.

He reveals to Rey that they are twins, brother and sister, and that there is a much larger threat that Snoke is after her and wants her dead. Luke comes along and tells Rey she is his daughter, and trains her to use the Force. Cue Episode VIII.

Just wanted to throw my theory of this shot into the mix:

[Show spoiler]Kylo Ren has killed Han Solo, Fin and Rey pursue him and Fin duels with him. Kylo injurs Fin (perhaps cuts his arm off) and the above shot is Rey crying over an injured Fin. Then she takes Luke's saber and duels with Kylo until he flees.

Twins are an old standby and Luke and Leia were twins, so it's certainly logical for a writer to want to make that part of a new story regardless of whether it was contained in the EU in a different form. And just because they've decided to go that route does not mean that it's only logical that in that case, they would write it as it was done in the EU. They're not using the EU because they don't want to and don't have to.

What would be an issue (for me) is if one of the twins goes to the "dark side", why they've done so and whether it's logical, believable and emotionally consistent for the character. Same if Luke does go dark as some rumors imply. I've always had a problem with the overall story in that it's never really explained in the films WHY Palpatine and eventually Vader want to rule the galaxy. What do they get out of it if they win? They're not tied to any one planet or country and they don't seem the least bit interested in material goods. Or is it just that they're evil for evil's sake?

Now if the "evil" twin happens to have access to historical records and discovers that everything the Jedi did was incompetent or wrong and thinks that his grandfather was murdered by Luke, then there's some rationalization, although you'd still have to wonder why he or she would swear allegiance to someone they've never met or known. The fact is that even Luke didn't really "know" Vader very well - he only spent a few hours with him.

Here's my theory....

[Show spoiler]The scene where Daisy Ridley is crying is over a dead Ewok. I think that whole sequence is where Kylo Ren goes to Endor to claim Vader's melted mask and they completely destroy the planet after they finish pillaging it. The scene where it shows the forest being engulfed in flames I believe is The New Order using the Star Killer planet on Endor and they completely destroy the planet.

It's implied that the Dark Side twists the mind of people who use it too much, particularly amplifying the hunger for power and personal gain.
In the old EU is made more explicit by showing the stories of the ancient sith empire where the Sith lords have a habit of murdering each other to go up the social ladder and the only thing that keeps the powers that be going is the fact that they are usually way more powerful than their underlings.
I remember playing KOTOR and finding the tombs of the first Sith Lords who originally were Jedi who dabbled in the dark side and were exiled, they came among a people called the Sith and instead of helping them like the Jedi do decided to become their ruling class, their leader was very powerful and died of natural death, but already at his funeral his immediate underlings started to try and kill each other, probably it won't be the same in the new EU but considering that Darth Bane (the guy who tried to control the Sith murder-boner by having only two big cheeses at a time), if not the precise circumtances of his like, is still canon will maintain the generic gist.

That's a good theory - I think it would make all fans happy too:
1. For the people that love Ewoks - an emotional sad scene

Yes, because they're going to wait until the end of the movie to apparently be on snowy Endor. Come on guys. That's Finns jacket, and chewies bandolier. It's not a bunch of dead ewoks.
