That's insurance in case the film turns out to be bad. They want to get as many people as possible to see it before word-of-mouth gets out. And if it turns out to be great, they want as many people as possible to see it as soon as possible, so that they'll return to see it again. People who see it more than once can really push the grosses over the top.

If it were playing in 70mm IMAX in NYC, I'd see it as soon as possible. But since it's not (unless the original list changes), I can wait until everything calms down a bit. I can't stand waiting on lines.

Personally, no matter how great it is, I think it's absolutely impossible for this film to meet expectations. We know the world, we know the old characters and from everything posted and the trailers, we pretty much know the new characters. When nothing much is new, it's hard to appreciate it.

I liked it better in the days when people knew very little about movies, even after they opened. I saw Star Wars months after it opened in 1977 and I knew almost nothing about it other than it featured two robots and that it got good reviews. Even with TESB, we didn't know what to expect for the second film. That was true for most films in those days, even if one read reviews.

I can comprehend their thinking, and if the movie is as half as good as it looks, then it will have a grand debut. I also agree about enjoying movies back before the internet more. There was a nice aura of excitement before the movie started, as you really didn't know much about the film before it started.

I doubt this movie will meet expectations, since some people build up the potential of a movie in their minds that sometimes just can't be met.

I think I'll enjoy it, since I do like JJ as a director, and I have low expectations for this film.

Also, don't you have a theater close that does reserve seating? A theater close to us only does reserved seating. It's so nice not having to wait in line for movies.

Even if the movie turns out bad, fans will see it 2 or 3 times to make sure!

Got a theory which I hope isn't true: in the trailer we see Rey slumped over a body crying, with snow falling behind her. In another trailer she's standing next to Finn who is about to take on Kylo Ren. Would they actually kill Finn in the first film, fooling us all! Mmmm

Not impossible that is the case and this is the big "surprise" of the film. First we're led to believe Finn is going to be the main Jedi guy of the trilogy, then he dies and it turns out Rey is our gal.

So far the first film of each trilogy has involved the death of a major character, so it's not impossible. I was convinced it'd be one of the original gangstas, but if it ends up being Finn, well, I didn't see that coming (until other people planted the idea in my head, anyway).

Absolutely no disrespect but,
What's with the love and praise for this director? He is very much a glorified straight-to-video director...Mission impossible sequel, star treck reboot/sequel, super 8 (steven s. omage), sequel-to-remake star trek, now star wars sequel.

Although you may think that about jj Abrahams a lot of us happen to like the movies he's made so please be respectful to our opinion too.

Well, my positive feelings toward Abrams go all the way back to stuff like "Felicity" and "Alias" and "Lost." Hell, say what you want about "Alias" and "Lost" as I know a lot of people thought they went straight off the rails as they progressed (I disagree, but that's a different discussion), just watch the very first episode of each of those shows. They are STELLAR! Heck, the first scene of "Alias" is probably one of my favorite sequences from any show ever, and the same goes for the whole introduction to "Lost" -- "Guys, where are we?" Still gives me chills.

I get that he was pretty much a producer on those shows, but he did direct those pilots.

Don't get me wrong: I'm not implying that I'm not also a fan of his films, because I definitely am. I think Super 8 and his Star Trek movies are excellent. I never really got into the MI series, so I can't comment there.

But I like his style, he exhibits a sense of humor that I think works almost all the time, and some of his stuff is just exhilarating. But of course, not everyone is going to agree on anything. That's the nature of opinions.
