I completely get what you're saying, and it is kinda ridiculous when you analyze it from the outside. But I am 100% guilty of buying all kinds of Star Wars memorabilia, it's the nostalgia, escapism, and fantasy that make Star Wars the marketing juggernaut that it is.

Nobody wants a Pierre Niemans action figure because it's just a boring normal detective dude, but Han Solo is a badass space smuggler who save princesses in his spare time.

Yes, Return of the Jedi wasn't as good as the first two films and the prequel trilogy was pretty terrible...but maybe The Force Awakens will be amazing...we'll know soon enough.

Pierre Niemans is a better character than Han Solo. Not joking.

And yeah I can hope to like S7ar Wa7s but you have to be realistic about these things.

Bonus points to people who caught the reference to another series which will incidentally also soon have 7 entries, and good ones at that!

Disney and Lucasfilm aren't scared of the prequel trilogy. They have books and comics set during, around, and directly connected to the prequels. Their biggest theme park attraction has the prequels in it to a huge degree. There will be movies set during and after that and even before that time. They're just doing stuff that feels familiar again for older audiences who didn't enjoy the prequels. But there is more prequel time stuff to explore, and it will be. People just need to be patient, and enjoy what we have for now.

Do you seriously believe, from an artistic, story, standpoint, that Empire should have been the end of it? No resolution?

My thoughts too. Return of the Jedi was my favorite film as a kid and Empire ended with one of the biggest cliffhangers in film history.

An interesting bit:

Quote:
"It was quite an unusual situation," Serkis tells us in the new issue of Empire. "I worked specifically with Domhnall Gleeson and with Adam Driver. My first day was basically standing on a 25-foot podium doing Lord Snoke without the faintest idea what he looked like... or in fact who he was! I was very high up, totally on my own, away from everybody else, but acting with them."
Coupled with the fact that he said Snoke "appears tall" in another interview, it makes you wonder. I somehow doubt Snoke is actually 30+ feet tall, given the kind of role the character will play and Serkis having hinted he'll use a lightsaber. That'd be a huge lightsaber. I think "appears tall" suggests that isn't his actual height, but that it's an illusion. There are some possibilities here:

1. He sits on a massive throne of some sort
2. He's hooked up to some form of giant machine
3. He has a long, snake-like lower body which he can rise up on to make himself appear taller, kinda like a cobra
4. A hologram (Think like the huge Palpatine hologram in Empire, though I think this is unlikely since I can't imagine they'd need him to stand on a podium for that)

Another interesting thing is that he refers to Snoke as "Lord", we haven't heard that title for him before. It reminds me of when he referred to the character as a "Sith general" many months ago. Is Serkis accidentally letting it slip that Snoke is in fact a Sith Lord, something that Abrams perhaps wants to remain a secret until the movie is playing in theaters?

I thought the same thing, for how many years/decades has he been talking about these experimental films? I'd love to see him direct more movies in the same vein as THX (hopefully approaching the same level of quality) but I won't take him seriously until he actually does it and doesn't just say he will.

Heck, Star Wars itself got oversaturated by 1980, no one needed a third film, let alone infinity more. Look at Crimson Rivers, a perfect example of a good way to handle a franchise:
  • two great films, and zero mediocre films, and zero bad films
  • Indeed, that's it. They didn't make a third film for no reason other than to introduce a race of creatures designed to sell toys. They aren't going to make a trilogy of astonishingly bad prequels in 20 years for no reason whatsoever. In 50 years, there will still just be the two films, standing there, for all to enjoy.
  • no asinine "Crimson Rivers expanded universe"
  • no line of "Crimson Rivers toys"
  • no rabid idiots committing a deification of Pierre Niemans (compare this to Han Solo, if he were real people would be queuing up to kiss his feet)
  • no people devoting their lives to it. Fans of the two Crimson Rivers movies watch them, say, "Ah, I love that film. Nice." AND THEN MOVE THE F*** ON WITH THEIR LIVES

Star Wars could have had this, they had two pretty great films as of 1980, if they stopped there, it would be better. Unfortunately, they went for the money grab (note: Again, I don't blame them for this. Much of life is a choice between artistic integrity and money, and Lucas chose the money. I do not begrudge him this for an instant). Although, that might have been predicted because the Holiday Special was already out by 1980. (indeed, you can add to the above list that there was no Crimson Rivers Holiday Special).

No, Star Wars will not stop. Yes, it will get oversaturated, quality will fall somewhat (not too much as there is not much left anyways), but most of the rabid fans (I know several) will remain rabid, seeing the movies not just once (as I admit I will do to stay in the loop) but several times, and then buying plastic shit (toys) and Blu-rays and building altars and so on.
This is certainly an interesting analysis, yet it comes across as a bit of bland armchair psychology. You talk like a person that has no need for physical objects, yet have been a part of a forum devoted to plastic shit that no one actually needs to own for five years. Star Wars also would have had a horrible ending if they cut it off at two films.

Moreover, why does it matter what someone chooses to spend their money on? We live in a society where we're forced to work to have paper with numbers on them to be able to do anything. Nothing in life is necessary out side of food, drink, and shelter. All of which is free. You can grow your own food, and build your own shelter.

So if people are forced to dedicate their lives, working forty hours or more a week doing mundane things that don't benefit survival in the slightest, why shouldn't they be allowed to spend their paper crap that means nothing on plastic crap that means nothing? Humanity has placed value on superfluous fluff. You might as well get used to it, since you're already a hypocrite. You're typing on either a computer or phone, neither of which is necessary to human survival, while being on an Internet forum dedicated to plastic disks that will someday erode, and will mean nothing to anyone in two hundred years..

So I'll repeat my question one last time: why does any of this matter to you?

I said "I" was almost saturated, (as in me), with the comic book hero films. I love the fantasy genre, so I'm hoping this series doesn't get stale.

Okay, so the discussion has largely moved on, and the last thing I want to do is be a stick in the mud or keep rehashing the same conversations, so I am going use to respond to those who responded to me and that may be it unless more people say stuff worth further response. I will use a spoiler tag though so those sick of me
[Show spoiler]and the fact that I don't bow at the altar of Han Solo
can skim right by.

True. Hindsight is 20/20. In 1980, I probably would not have, but the way they handled Return makes me wish for a situation. That being said, I would not have minded a competently handled film that was in the same ballpark of quality as the first two. As it stands, leaving an open cliffhanger with no futher movies, no games, no books, just a 35-year open cliffhanger.... yeah, that'd be kind of epic.

Thank you for the detailed response.

Yes I like the physical boxes. Touché. I may have to reconsider my general mockery of toy collectors because, really, what is the difference between a movie box and toy? Well played sir.

You misunderstand me. People should in fact be free to buy whatever they want. The fact is, there is supply and demand for Star Wars (and other) plastic shit, and who am I to stop that? That doesn't mean that I can't generally mock or not understand or dislike the fact that such a trade exists. I'm not sure why you assume any of this matters to me beyond my personal opinion.

It also looked as cumbersome as hell, with both the Stormtrooper and Finn swinging with a leaden motion. Interesting...

I think that Lucas had balls the size of grapefruits to pull that off. Irvin Kershner said that he had to suggest to the audience that 'There would be more' as the film ended. Interesting that none of the prequels dared go for such a cliffhanger move.

I just gotta say, it's very refreshing to see Harrison Ford having so much fun. Just got done watching a Star Wars promo and to see him having fun and interacting with the fans makes me re-appreciate Harrison Ford all over again.
