It depends on the display. This option was added for Sony Dolby Vision TV's without optimal processing chips as they could not handle some of the DV processing duties as normal. Leave it on Auto.

If the TV has adequate DV chipsets, you must let the proper duty hand off occur (some happen in the player, some in the TV) as prior to this Sony-friendly version. Otherwise, issues could crop up.

I've got yet another dopey question about my TV...I've had it since late February, the UHD player since April, still getting used to it.

Because my receiver doesn't pass 4k HDR, I'm going to straight from the UHD Blu-Ray player to the TV via HDMI (which means I have to change inputs on the TV to HDMI 1, while the TV outputs the audio to the receiver via the HDMI 4/ARC. The receiver gets the audio as PCM, so I'm assuming either the TV or the player is doing the decoding. Is there any benefit at all to using the TV's optical output to go into the receiver vs. using the ARC? I just figured the ARC output/input would be essentially the same thing. I need a new receiver anyway which will clear all this up, but in the meantime, trying to make the best of what I have.

Your UHD player should have two HDMI outputs. Send HDMI 1 output to the TV's best HDMI port (most compatible if they aren't all fully compliant with 4k and HDR). Send the HDMI 2 (audio only) output to the current receiver allowing it to decode the lossless audio stream itself (turn on audio bitstream out and turn off secondary audio and set dynamic range control to off as well as PCM down-converting to off). That will give you the best option until such time as the receiver is replaced with a model supporting Dolby Vision (low and high latency), HLG, etc. Then, you can go back to a single HDMI out via your player.

You want to bypass ARC and looping audio through the TV as much as possible for the best audio quality possible. If your receiver is really old and outdated and only has an optical input and no HDMI ports, then use a direct audio connection from the player to the receiver using an optical cable in the meantime.

Thank you for the advice, FF, will fix all that as soon as I can. The secondary output on the Sony UHD BD is indeed audio only, so I guess that goes straight to the Blu-Ray HDMI input on the receiver while the primary HDMI from the player goes straight to the TV's HDMI 1 (or 2 or 3, doesn't matter). The TV has four HDMI inputs, with the 4th being the ARC swapping spit with the receiver...the whole shebang was being carried by the ARC output from the receiver to the display's ARC in, so I was only getting 1080p out to the TV because the receiver doesn't have 4k pass-through. Learning curve. I'll catch up.

I've got no problem taking the ten seconds to change the input on the TV to HDMI 1 and then selecting the Blu-Ray input on the receiver. My wife likes things a bit more simple, and I'm not around all the time, so...just another reason I need a new receiver. It's not a bad receiver, handles all audio codecs up to DTS-HD and DolbyTruHD/DolbyDigital+. Really just want one to simplify the process and have 4kHDR pass-through and get caught up for the next five-to-six years.

May I add... We decided to delay our 2018 TV Shootout so we can include Sony's Z9F and A9F.

Not officially set yet, but we're checking with our special presenters to confirm Saturday and Sunday, September 22-23, 2018.

Disappointing that this has to be done but ultimately I think it's completely necessary. Good move Robert.

Really looking forward to seeing what the specs and general performance of the Z9F will be like, fingers crossed they knock it out of the park.

Outside of that... I don't think I would attempt to try and "prove otherwise" to anyone. I'm happy. Too bad so much 4k technology has its own problematic methods in terms of how stuff is presented from one display to another.
But serously... going from plasma to OLED was insane. Individual pixel clarity is awesome.
Does everyone feel that way? Nah.
I'm happy, though.
Oh she is sexy for sure that thin OLED TV. And the 4K picture is to die for from real 4K material. And the extra high dynamic range beats any plasma before it. Blacks as Kuro Elite.

And did you see the magnificent high dynamic range of those tremendous high end quantum dots TVs! Wow! The picture is to resurrect the dead from his grave!

A better video processor chip than the one in your TV.

The irony, the horror (Apocalypse Now Redux), ...the best Panasonic 4K HDR OLED TVs aren't available in the USA, but the best Panasonic 4K HDR10+ & DV Blu-ray players are.

What happens if the new Sony tvs aren't out by September? Also, Samsung is supposed to be releasing a new line of 8k tvs this fall, if Samsung deems them as the new flagship, it should also be included if available?
