Yeah, guilty as charged, as I’m often more distracted by what happened further on up the pipeline with regards to any motion picture, e.g. - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...o#post11653357

Lucky, you guys are around here to better facilitate viewing the end product as expeditiously as possible with dem more focused consumer-like hyperlinks.

I should think that Dobly is a given if this is a Netflix original, nowadays they actually mandate that it must be in HDR and they won't accept anything other than Dobly.

Some cinematographer musings by Sam on Lost in Space and other BSCs as to their work –

(note the dog chiming into their discussion shows good sense and timing in objecting to the host’s assessment of HDR at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YvfDbvuXtM#t=1h4m18s )

answer is at ~ 10:23 timestamp. The interview has some nice behind the scenes tidbits regarding 1917 (https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/1917-4K-Blu-ray/259242/ ) after about the 1 hr. mark.

Of course! Thanks, yes I forgot about that. A Netflix production gives me the confidence it will be Dolby Vision.

I think HDR/Dolby Vision are great when the product was either designed for it, or the makers carefully re-graded every single shot.
This is revisionist film-making at its best. Same goes for Dolby Atmos/DTS-X.
I hardly hear anyone complain about the original look/sound of the film in question anymore.
No way, did those classic movies ever have that kind of dynamic range in the cinemas. Projectors could never manage to pull that off. Am I wrong?

After experiencing it for about 2 months and 20+ movies, I personally would be perfectly happy with Blu-ray, or 4k without HDR/DV, as it just looks unnatural to me. Nothing in real life is this bright, or has this kind of contrast, at least not the way it's depicted on the screen, and my OLED only has about 700nits. Who the hell would want it any brighter?
Tell me if I am wrong, and most importantly, why?

Not saying, I hate it, but I don't think it makes movies look the way the were intended to, at least not older ones.
New productions with that in mind? Sure, go right ahead.

I appreciate nostalgia because sometimes, with certain films, they bring back fond memories of what I was doing (personal, professional) at that exact time in my life. And the closer one reproduces that image and sound, I think the more vivid the recall….at least for me.

That said, who knows? (other than perhaps some egotistical archivist or asset manager who thinks he can channel dead Directors), who knows for sure what a Director would have intended if he/she had had access to modern technological tools (from camera to screen) to provide an iteration which most closely emulated his/her eyesight and creative thoughts at the time.

I think studios are content in offering UHD Blu-rays with HDR so long as SDR iterations (DVD, Blu-ray, non-home deliverables) remain available to consumers intent on seeing something more akin to the original presentation in terms of dynamic range.

That kind of thinking takes us awfully close to "let's just colourise everything that was made in black and white" though Mr P.
