True and I think stating that on the forums (this, AVS, etc.) is tantamount to committing a mortal sin.

It is indeed. But there's not much that can be done to challenge the orthodoxy/hegemony of "perfect black" now, though it doesn't help that content creators are more than willing to overlook (or perhaps don't even see, owing to custom firmware) the flaws as OLEDs are pretty much the default client monitors worldwide. That article you linked about the finish of Wandavision was a case in point, the production shipping LG OLEDs to the post-production principles so they could post the movie remotely during the pandemic.

They are not working professionals directly involved in the filmmaking industry.
I admit that at this point I’ve developed a bias against HDR10+ which sticks in my craw a bit. As an analogy, how would you like it if you worked for years and spent a lot of money to produce a revolutionary medication to improve one’s eyesight for seeing things they’d never seen before and then someone quickly comes along and reverse engineers that outcome using a different methodology, then in turn, gives it away as a generic on the cheap and promotes it as the only drug available for that purpose to JoeQPublic in their own drugstores, of which there are more than any other type drugstore in the country. I think that would make me reluctant to invest the time, money and effort into a new revolutionary product. Then at the end of the day when there is an atmosphere created to impede developing something truly cutting edge, ultimately, I think the consumer loses out most and we are left with marginal improvements year to year. |

As I said, I agree with the sentiment but using an example of a rival drugs company putting out a life-enhancing treatment for free (those evil BASTARDS) would only seem to appeal to those who had shares in the company that sold the drug for $500 at a time.

And you can use it on sets from every display maker - except Samsung. Dolby invents HDR10 - gives it away. Develops Dolby Vision for enhanced application. Samsung takes Dolby's HDR10 tech, gives it a squirt of metadata and calls it HDR10+. Bull-shit. |

A monopoly by one company? I call out the stupid fanbots who worship Dolby for no reason. I picked my TV and 4k player so I have all formats, I wanted Vision and have it. But in saying that, I don't see DV as some magic that makes it all better and can compare all the formats. So one video gets posted about 10+ and very excited has a headfit? Its a bit pathetic when we have thousands of DV videos and it's evangelised and never called out. One video talking about how it works and comparing to 10? Somebody think of the children! Change of thread name to Dolby discussion thread? |

I’d, and I’ll bet Peter, too, would feel the same if the shoe were on thee other foot – Samsung inventing something out of the blue and Dolby tweaking it a bit, but essentially copycatting it and then excluding it from their consumer TVs if they manufactured TVs. It’s the principle. As far as your comment ‘one video gets posted about 10+ and very excited has a headfit’, FYI not on this thread, but just within this past month I was forwarded another video produced by Florian in which he slid in a short segment comparing Dolby Vision to HDR10+ suggesting equivalency in picture quality and actually superiority of HDR10+ for UHD BD. Myself being exposed to two different videos within a couple weeks of each other is a bit irritating given the history of HDR. |
