Just finished watching the film on Netflix. Is Jerry played by the villain from The Princess Bride?
Jerry's the best thing about the film, and his scenes are well worth dealing over anything with the main character. I know the film wants me to root for the everydork against a dashing, charismatic bully, but Charley's too child-like in his naivete to really be on his side? I can't believe a teen who watches horror movies on TV doesn't know the very basics of combating vampires; his scenes are painful to watch for the beginning of the film. And why would he spill the beans that he's a vampire to a cop, knowing that the cop will discredit him. I've never been a fan of "cry wolf" stories, frankly. I never grew up with Fright Night, so I never had the nostalgia factor to soften how incredibly corny the film is. It has a PG-rated script painted over R-rated monster effects, and it amazes me how the actors overact. I can't tell which character mugs at the camera the most: the hero's sidekick or the villain's sidekick. Eh, maybe it helps if I DID grew up with the film, because there's enough scenes in it that makes me shake my head that people who watched it at a young age probably embrace them. The intended campiness of it just throws me off. I guess I should be glad to see this one first-hand; after blindly buying Nightbreed and regretting it, I don't wish to have that happen again. |

Chris Sarandon was indeed the evil prince Humperdinck from The Princess Bride and ex-husband of actress Susan Sarandon. I happen to love the film for its tongue-in-cheek kookiness. |

I placed my order on my lunch break at work today, at around 4PM Central Time (so about an hour after pre-orders went up), and didn't have any issues with the site running slow.
I ordered three copies (along with The Purple Rose of Cairo and Breaking Away): one for me with the other two being for friends I was helping out. I hope the three year wait is worth it for ya, neoz. ![]() |

It's actually quite brilliant how it treads the fine line between homage, parody and horror so well. This creates a really vibrant, lively atmosphere for the story. The script was actually really well written and the Peter Vincent and Jerry Dandridge characters were very memorable and well-acted. I particularly loved Roddy MacDowell as Peter Vincent in the film. A good example is there's only a few horror movies in history that have characters that are memorable enough where you remember their names. Night of the Living Dead with Ben and Cooper. Dawn of the Dead with Peter, Roger, Flyboy and Fran, The Shining with Jack and Fright Night with Peter Vincent and Jerry Dandridge. Heck, I even remember Charlie Brewster, Amy and Evil. lol Really the only other films I can think of off the top of my head that can be equal homage, comedy, camp and serious horror all in one are Braindead (Dead Alive), Return of the Living Dead, Vamp, and some of the classic 80's Hong Kong horror films like Haunted Cop Shop 1 and 2 (highly recommended for anyone on this thread cause they're like a tribute to Fright Night). And the most awesome part of Fright Night is even with the comedy, parody and homages, the threat the characters face always seem very real and dangerous. The movie always remembers that at its heart it's a horror film so the threat is always present in the story regardless of the occasional campiness. It's really a gem in my books of a horror movie. =D |

FRIGHT NIGHT is brilliantly self aware and its playful tongue in cheek attitude is so fun.The performances, photography, 80's cheese soundtrack all are spot on. Even the smallest of details I still geek out over like at one point the film CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS is playing on the television which is a perfect comparison of a film that's both funny but it's roots are firmly in horrors hollowed grounds.
