There were definitely some murmurings, but not sure whether it'll amount to anything beyond that at this point in time...

Hmm. Maybe he had a duff disc, either that or it was PAL and he was playing it on an NTSC player or something (is that still a thing?).

BFI's May titles are starting to pop up on Amazon, by the way.

Rita, Sue and Bob Too (Dual Format Edition) and FILM / NOTFILM: A Kino-Essay by Ross Lipman (Dual Format Edition) both set for May 22nd.

I'm particularly interested in the latter, which will probably be a port of the Milestone releases with possibly some different extras.

Could Rita, Sue and Bob Too mean a deal with Film4, or is it just a one-off deal given BFI's relations with the Clarke family? I'd say the latter is more likely but you never know.

I'd tend also to think it's a "left over" from the huge Dissent & Disruption project.

Well they seem to be the only UK label who've licensed from them before (Comrades, Alice, Institute Benjamenta), so I suspect it's just a one-off.

I wonder if other labels have tried before, or it's just that bigger names like BFI and Criterion have a little more influence in these matters?

Man, I'd love to support Milestone, but it was a poor marketing move to split Film/Not Film into two separate releases. If they wanted to make the argument, they should've paired them as a more expensive double-disc edition. Now, if the BFI release includes the production of Waiting for Godot, it'll be a no-brainer to pick up the twofer version instead...

The BFI release has the 1979 remake of Film added, so already has something else going for it. I imagine they will try and secure as much from the Milestone releases as possible, but you also have to ask how much they can squeeze onto presumably one dual-layer BD, or whether some extras will have to be relegated to DVD discs.

Either that or it turns out to be a 4-disc release...but that would be an even bigger financial gamble than some of their recent choices, since this is still a fairly niche release as it is. Assuming they got most of those extras from the Milestone releases, if I were them I'd drop the DVD discs to save on packaging (I'm surprised they're not doing that for the Lino Brocka set).

I take it you're aware that the combined running time of both the 1965 and 1979 versions of Film is less than an hour?

Sure, but combined with Notfilm and all the other Milestone extras, plus presumably some of their own extras, might it be a struggle to fit it all on one BD-50? I dunno, just spitballing anyway.

I've since realised the 1979 version isn't actually listed yet anyway, so maybe it won't be a problem after all. Still strange Milestone decided to release them separately, especially since Film is only 20 minutes long.

That would be nice. I have the DVD, but would upgrade to BD in a flash.

I also have the Twilight Time of Rita, Sue and Bob Too. If that feature-length documentary is as substantial as it sounds, I may have to double-dip.

Svankmajer's Alice and A Month In the Country both appear to be licensed from Film Four as well.

I'd have picked it up whoever released it over here as it's such a fun film but I'm very glad BFI are putting out Rita, Sue and Bob Too in UK as it means there's a good chance of some quality extras, plus of course we'll get a booklet.

Yep, as well as Comrades, Institute Benjamenta and A Zed and Two Noughts. I wonder if The Crying Game and A Letter to Brezhnev are licensed from them too?

I'd love the BFI could get some much-wanted Film4 titles like The Straight Story, Local Hero, Ghost Dog and When the Wind Blows, assuming they've got a relationship with Film4 that few other UK labels seem to have.
