Yes, on board for Cry of the City definitely, and possibly Carmen Jones or The Birth of a Nation. Hope they're added to the offer soon as I might be able to snag an Arrow title or two as well...they're still actively in the offer right now.

For anybody who hasn't got it already, I can't recommend The War Game enough.

It was an absolutely intense watch, something that just deeply shaked me up, and went straight into my Top 100.

Hopefully a few more might be added, like Odds Against Tomorrow. The £8.99 selection looks quite small at the moment.

If you liked the War Game I'd strongly recommend Threads. It's with Simply Media at the moment and despite being shot on film they chose to release it on DVD only from the same master used for the mid-80's BBC VHS edition.

There used to be a perfectly watchable version on Youtube but the only full version on there at the moment is a faded fuzzy horizontally stretched copy with Italian subtitles.

It's funny how something that's so old, treats a subject that's no longer quite as big a threat (all out nuclear war) can still somehow chill you to the core. Fantastic movie.

Oh, and Amazon seems to be price matching some of these offers, just picked up Birth of a Nation for £8.99!

In some way, it never got old. WMD-dissuasion remains one of the most used arsenal to avoid all-out war, which is precisely what the movie is about : what happens if this fails ?

It could still fail tomorrow. Or the day after. Some countries like Sweden reinstated compulsory military draft for fear that another world war happens soon.

But what the movie descripts and which is so chilling is how things can suddenly turned awful but also awfully "mechanical" in how they unfold. It's all extremely relentlessly logical. That's what most frightening to me. How all seems to smoothly unfold. The looting. The confiscations. The public mass executions. The riotings.

And the movie doesn't shy away from showing you this. Ill people ? Let's shoot them in the street and burn them before it gets worse.

I need both of these actually. Will snap 'em up if they're added!

Well, Sweden is a bit of a special case with its tradition of "armed neutrality." Considering its small population, ~8 million, it has an outsized military industry with the likes of Bofors, Saab etc. I didn't even know they'd abolished the military draft, I assumed they'd continued it, like the other Scandinavian countries (albeit at low numbers).

And you're right, it could still fail, but we're no longer "at the brink" where any little unexpected event could trigger a nuclear holocaust. When I was a kid a power outage could make people wonder if war had broken out. That's how tense things were.

It certainly is a different world, but Trump, Putin and Kim Jong-un don't do a lot to reassure us on this kind of matter.

There's a few titles in HMVs 5 for £30, but only some are in stock. Really want:

and others, but it's OOS at the moment.

Germany, Pale Mother; Vivre sa Vie; The Innocents; Night and the City; Bande a Part are in stock.

I should really look in-store, but this weather...

lazy springs to mind

One or two I might pick up if they're still available come pay day. I was hoping we would see some more of the Ozu collection. I watched Equinox Flower and really enjoyed it.

I'll definitely pick up Late Autumn if Fopp are selling them for £6 each when I'm in Glasgow this weekend though.

I wonder if HMV will add Around the World with Orson Welles?

It was in the offer last year.

Unsure about Underground. Review here:

I went for Cry of the City, Underground, The Glass Shield, Faces, and The Birth of a Nation yesterday afternoon. Only The Glass Shield has dispatched though cause they all suddenly went OOS when I placed my order. Hope they all still have booklets, and The Birth of a Nation still has the slipcover (need to get the MoC edition too, even though the BFI transfer is arguably better).

Was after plenty of others, shame they weren't added to the offer; namely Privilege, Opening Night, Farewell My Concubine, Culloden/The War Game, Psychomania, Odds Against Tomorrow, Paris Blues, El Sur. The Crying Game is probably too soon to be in the offer...maybe next time! Good offer though, was almost gonna get a few Arrow titles but would rather grab a few BFI ones that I had almost bought anyway in recent months. Been after Faces for a long time in particular, and was waiting for Cry of the City to fall in price. Surprised to see The Glass Shield in there so soon, but glad to get it earlier than expected!

Why unsure? Best it's ever looked, and includes the extended TV version on the second and third discs (DVD though). Never seen it but heard a lot of positive things about it, and Kusturica in general.

In fact, I wonder if MoC will pick up Time of the Gypsies in their Sony deal?

Underground is an amazing movie! (one of my favourites of the 90's & imo Kusturica's best movie).

Just never heard of it - but can't really complain if I don't like it: for £6.
